Free to express your opinion

By John Wills - Speaker Pro Tem

I have been consistent in the fact that I am a constitutional conservative who believes in the free market, limited government and the rights of the states. These concepts, for me, reach across the entire spectrum of the American ideal, in which I believe that those who disagree with me have the right to do so. That doesn’t mean I agree with them or that I believe they are correct in their assumption.

Who went and made you a Christian?

By Brian Jack - First Lutheran Church

If there’s one thing that humans have consistently failed at since their dawning on the earth, it’s sorting out good from evil (see Adam and Eve – Genesis 3). Often when I’ve asked folks what it means to be a Christian the response comes in some form that depends on them doing good or remaining good by their own efforts. I’m reminded of a Taoist story about an old farmer.

Hardline stances won't settle the abortion debate

By Seth Boyes - News Editor

I'm a tired young newsman, folks, but there's no way for me to not talk about what's happened in the last week. My generation has never known a world in which Roe v. Wade wasn't the law of the land — and in which it wasn't a surefire divisive issue.

Pants on fire

By Brad Hicks - Publisher

Disingenuousness is a nice word people use instead of asserting that someone is lying.

There’s a lot of disingenuousness in our country regarding the Dobbs decision regarding abortion handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court last week.

Intentional GOOD this summer

Leonid & Friends wow crowds

Two sold-out performances attest to the talent and showmanship of Leonid & Friends. The audience arrived expecting to hear some great music and were definitely not disappointed. Wednesday night's audience included fans from 13 states. There was a large waiting list that unfortunately did not get to hear this amazing troupe of musicians.

Thank you gay Christians

This month, the world's LGBTQIA+ communities come together and celebrate the freedom to be themselves. June is marked with education, parades and conversations centered around the past, present and future of this marginalized community.

Concern over proposed RV park

I am writing to express my concerns over a proposed 88-plus unit RV park being proposed just across the street from East Lake in the Kelley’s Beach area. Developers are scheduled to appear in front of the county’s Board of Adjustment at 7 p.m. Monday, June 27. This RV park will sit on a very narrow dead-end road that already does not have a shoulder, sidewalk or path.

Q&A: Inflation swallows up savings

Q: What are you hearing from Iowans about inflation?

Securing critical minerals is essential for America’s national security

Over the past year, we’ve seen the world become a more dangerous place. From Afghanistan to Ukraine, America’s enemies are on the march. Today, our country faces threats from emboldened adversaries around the planet like Russia, Iran, China and violent extremist organizations in Africa and Afghanistan.

Double the pleasure with big bands

In many parts of the United States, big bands are a lost art. Not here in the Iowa Great Lakes Region. The area is fortunate to have two big bands with big horn sections and very talented rhythm sections. Not only that, they each play every week.

Battling biases

Gannett, publisher of USA Today, hundreds of newspapers across the country and most recognizably in our state, The Des Moines Register, announced in recent days that it is reducing editorial pages in its markets. The company said it would be instead doing a more reader-interactive format. Editorial pages will not completely disappear from Gannett properties, but they will be less frequent.

Two items in Gannett's announcement struck me.
