Enough is enough: Bad behavior by coaches, parents and fans must stop

There’s an unfortunate trend continuing in Iowa and across the nation that must be addressed: the negative behavior of some coaches, parents, and fans at high school athletic events.

Far too often, we see yelling, harassment, disrespect, and even physical assault directed at high school referees, umpires, and other officials during and after games. Often, the harassment continues on social media. Perhaps you’ve witnessed it firsthand — or even engaged in it yourself.

A moment in history inside a thin, scuffed frame

By Seth Boyes - News Editor

They say you only need two items to make a collection — so I guess I collect editorial cartoons now.

Not too long ago, I and my family were browsing through second-hand picture frames at Cherished Again in Milford, and I spied one that still had something in it.

Let's explore additional resource officers before arming school staff

The Spirit Lake School Board's Sept. 12 meeting was attended by all five board members, the superintendent, the board’s attorney, several faculty and administrative staff. It was their unanimous attempt to pass a school policy that would allow 10 school personal to carry concealed guns on school property. They would have 40 hours of training versus a police officer who receives many hundreds of hours in training for crisis situations.

Hit Men appear at art center again

By Doris Welle - Performance Reviewer

Last Wednesday night was not the first time the Hit Men performed on the stage at the Pearson Lakes Art Center. The results were similar. We all went home with our ears hurting.

The Hit Men are a very talented group of musicians who have all played back up to very famous performers. Steve Murphy has worked for projects by Elton John, Eric Burdon and Chuck Negron, to name a few.

Q: How do Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) inflate prescription drug costs?

By Pastor Perry Aalgaard - First Lutheran Church

Today, we live in a very individualized society, one where it is very common to focus on personal wants or needs in the moment and to forget about the impact it might have on others. We have many opportunities for hurts.

Letter to the Editor

It is nice to know that for as little as $5,000, a small farming community can be bought. On July 19, 2022, the city of Marcus sent a letter to the Iowa Utilities Board in support of the Summit Carbon Solutions CO2 sequestration pipeline. On the same day they sent their letter of support, Summit Carbon Solutions donated $5,000 to the Marcus trail project.

Several unanswered questions require a pause to hazardous C02 pipeline permits

In his recent op-ed, Seth Boyes is correct in his assessment that a recent California vote should give Iowa pause on permits for hazardous CO2 pipelines. The regulation bans the sale of gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035. This past week, 17 additional states indicated they may enact similar rules.

I'll start by saying I've never been a boat owner.

I've barely been a boat user in my time.

The Lord's Prayer

By Pastor Gwen Dressel - Christian Family Worship Center

Our Father, which art in heaven
Hallowed by your name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those that trespass against us.
Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil,
for thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever.
