United States Attorney Matt M. Dummermuth announced Tuesday, Feb. 3, that a man who conspired to manufacture and distribute methamphetamine and pseudoephedrine in the Okoboji area pled guilty to two federal charges on Jan. 23, in federal court in Sioux City.

A memorial service was held Feb. 7 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel for Ronald David Karels, 56, of Fredericksburg who passed away Feb. 1, 2009 at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.
Rev. R. Kenneth Brooks officiated.
Mr. Karels was a field sales manager for The Alamo Group and owner of Symphony of Suds Carwash in England Run. He was also an avid boater and golfer.

A celebration of life ceremony was held Feb. 3 at the First Presbyterian Church in Spirit Lake for Imogene Ruth Martini, 96, who passed away Jan. 31 at Lakes Regional Hospital. Rev. Clint Loveall officiated. Interment was at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Spirit Lake.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 14 at Heritage United Methodist Church in New Prague for James Pieper, 71, of New Prague who died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009 at Queen of Peace Hospital.
Rev. Judy McEachran officiated. Honorary casket-bearers were Bryan Ehlers, Ken Johnson, Carl Pieper, Rod Sowles, Travis Crawmer and Larry Johnson. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial in Jackson at a later date.

Funeral services were held Jan. 31 at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Arnolds Park for Mildred O. Thompson, 98, who passed away Jan. 27 at Lakes Regional Healthcare.
Dr. Sarah Rohret officiated. Interment was at Memorial Gardens in Spirit Lake.
Mildred O. Thompson, the daughter of Ben and Lena (Birkland) Benson was born June 21, 1910 in Emmetsburg.

Katy A. Ballantyne was born Jan. 16, 1924, the daughter of Jacob and Jennie (Bimberg) Juusola in Menagha, Minn.

Funeral services with military honors were held Jan. 10 in Trenton, Fla. for Andrew Davis, 64, of Middleburg, Fla. formerly residing in Spirit Lake, who passed away Jan. 5, 2009 at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. after a long battle with cancer.
He was a retired Navy veteran of 36 years including Civil Service and formerly worked at Sylecraft and Polaris Industries until returning to Florida in 2005.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4 at the Schuchert Funeral Home in Spirit Lake for Richard "Skip" Ewen, 81, of Arnolds Park, who passed away Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake.
He was born on May 16, 1927, in Milford, to Roscoe and Frieda (Erickson) Ewen.

Funeral services were held Jan. 28 at the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake for Betty Ann Moore, 69, who passed away Jan. 23 peacefully in her home in Spirit Lake.
Rev. Lon Lewis officiated. Interment was at the North Lawn Cemetery in Spencer.

Lynette and Kyle Alger were married Oct. 11, 2008 at Crown of Glory Lutheran Church in Chaska, Minn. The wedding service was performed by Pastor Reggie Klindworth. The musicians for the wedding were Yoko Miyamoto and Dean Dirkes. Soloist was Krista Dirkes.
Lynette is the daughter of David and Marilyn Pawelk of Lester Prairie, Minn. Kyle is the son of Jim and Judy Alger of Spirit Lake.
