Indians win third straight to open the season

The Spirit Lake girls basketball team moved to 3-0 overall on the season with a 64-46 road win over Jackson County Central on Friday.
The Indians took an 18-10 lead after one and extended their advantage to 36-20 at the half. The Huskies kept it much more close in the second half, but Spirit Lake outscored the hosts 14-13 in both the third and fourth quarters to salt away the victory.

Titans, Pioneers compete at Spencer

Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire and Okoboji wrestlers traveled to Spencer Thursday to kick off the winter at a double dual.
The Titans went 1-1 picking up a win over the Pioneers who went 0-2 on the evening.

Stumbo leads Pioneers to win over Wolves

Okoboji freshman Kallyn Stumbo filled the stat sheet on Thursday night, leading the Pioneers to a 62-47 home win over Dickinson County rival Harris-Lake Park.
Stumbo finished with 25 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, seven steals and three blocked shots in the victory.

Pioneers swept by Wildcats in Inwood

The Okoboji girls and boys basketball team suffered a pair of road losses to West Lyon on Tuesday, Nov. 29 in the season opener. The girls lost 57-34 and the boys fell 75-45.
The Pioneer girls fell behind 10-6 after one quarter and 27-18 at the half. West Lyon stretched its lead with a 14-10 score in the third quarter before outscoring the Pioneers 16-6 in the final stanza to seal the win.

Sentencing set in West Okoboji assault case

A Huxley resident and Lakes property owner has entered a guilty plea and will be sentenced Dec. 15 after he admitted inappropriate contact with two underage girls.
Investigators originally charged 71-year-old William Hurd with three counts of indecent contact with a child and one count of assault with the intent to commit sexual abuse.

Plastic bags find a new home at Iowa Lakes

Some materials for new furniture at the Iowa Lakes Community College may have once helped shoppers carry cartons of milk, eggs and bread.
Iowa Lakes was awarded a $1,800 grant from the "Build with Bags" program earlier this year. The money was used to purchase a table and three benches crafted from thousands of recycled plastic bags.

Westergard earns 'Citizen of the Years' award

Ken Westergard has accomplished a lot in his more than eight decades in the Iowa Great Lakes Region.
He helped develop infrastructure in the area, ran his own company and continues to be an active member in his community. But the achievement he is most proud of is raising his family.
His wife, Dorene, two sons, Mark and Kirk, and daughter Melode have motivated him to get involved throughout the years. And on Wednesday, he will be celebrated for this dedication to the area.

Prairie Lakes Conference dates set

The Prairie Lakes Conference Planning Committee has announced Aug. 9-11 as the dates for the upcoming 2017 Prairie Lakes Conference. The Okoboji Blue Water Festival will follow the conference on Aug. 12. The Clean Water Week festivities be similar to last year's activities. ATV, ORV, snowmobile reminder issued

Dickinson County Recorder Ann Ditsworth reminds owners of ATVs, ORVs, and Snowmobiles that it is time to complete their annual registration renewals. Renewals completed prior to Dec. 31 will avoid a $5 penalty; 2017 Snowmobile trail permits are also available. Payments may be made via cash, check or credit card. Stop in to the recorder's office at the courthouse to complete your renewals today.

Low-income energy assistance

The 2016-17 Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) has been established to help qualifying low-income Iowa homeowners and renters pay for a portion of their primary heating costs for the winter heating season. Application will be taken from Oct. 1, 2016 to April 30, 2017 for the elderly and/or disabled households. All other households can apply from Nov. 1, 2016 to April 30, 2017. This program is not designed to pay household's total energy cost.

Iowa Lakes hosts murder mystery

Dress as a gangster or silent screen star! Come as a flapper or come as you are! Join the Iowa Lakes Community College Foundation, for "Crime and Punishment," a 1920s-themed murder mystery experience, to be held at "The Shores of Five Island" community center in Emmetsburg on Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11. Social begins at 6 p.m. and show starts at 7 p.m.

Lake Park plans bingo nights

Lake Park American Legion Post #371, American Legion Auxiliary Unit #371 and Lake Park Rescue will be holding six nights of bingo to benefit each group's programs. Bingo nights are Jan. 14, Jan. 21, Feb. 11, Feb. 25, March 11 and March 25. The groups need items for prizes for the bingo games and are asking for local support. Organizers are willing to pick up any items donated to their cause by Dec. 16.

UU Fellowship to hold holiday reading

The Iowa Lakes Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will hold a holiday reading and have traditional seasonal music at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at its service at the Arrowwood Conference and Convention Center in Okoboji. Rev. Jim Ramsey, a member of the fellowship and a retired Methodist minister, will lead the service. Coffee will be served at 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. An optional lunch is served after the program. Cost of the lunch is $10.

Benefit to help area man fight cancer

An omelet lunch and bake sale are being held to benefit Jim Jones, who is battling cancer, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Lake Park Community Center. Donations can also be made at Savings Bank in Lake Park. Jones is a long-time friend of Camp Okoboji, Cohrs Construction, Lake Park and the Lakes Area. As he receives cancer treatments, prayers and support are being requested of his friends.

Healing service at ST. Alban's Episcopal

The northwest Iowa Chapter of the Order of St. Luke will be offering its Quarterly Public Service of Healing and Holy Eucharist at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11, at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, Spirit Lake. Rev. Robert Kem, a member of the Order of Saint Luke and a retired priest from St. Anne's in Ankeny, will lead the service. Father Robert will also lead the regular Eucharist service 10 a.m. that Sunday at St. Alban's. The International Order of St.

Computer stimulation discussion

The Morning Users Group (MUG) meets at 9:30 a.m. on Fridays at the Black Box Theater in the Sami Center at the Spirit Lake High School. The group will meet on Dec. 9 and Dec. 16, then again on Jan. 6. The group is made of beginner and experienced computer users discusses the latest trends in computer technology and how to solve problems brought by the users. Come and listen to how others have fixed their computer problems and learn possible solutions to your computer issues.
