Titans drop a pair to Rebels

The Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire girls and boys basketball teams dropped a pair of games at a home doubleheader with Sioux Central on Friday.
The GT/RA girls fell 58-49 to the Rebels, while the Titan boys lost 73-53.
In the girls contest, Sioux Central led 16-7 after one quarter and 30-16 at the break. The Titans bounced back in the second half, outscoring the Rebels 17-14 in the third and 15-14 in the fourth, but Sioux Central hung on for the 10-point victory.

Dulin signs with Morningside

Spirit Lake's Abby Dulin recently signed to continue her athletic and academic career at Morningside College in Sioux City. Dulin will golf for the Mustangs.

Titans lose barn-burner to St. Mary's

The Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire boys basketball team came out on the wrong end of a barn-burner Thursday night against Storm Lake St. Mary's. The two squads combined for 170 points on the night, but the Panthers earned the 92-78 victory at home.

Wolves fall in War Eagle doubleheader

The Harris-Lake Park girls and boys basketball teams dropped a War Eagle Conference home doubleheader with Hinton on Tuesday, Jan. 31. The Wolves girls lost 47-36 and the boys fell 62-53 to the Blackhawks.

Pioneers drop two at Orange City

The Okoboji girls and boys basketball teams dropped a pair of Siouxland Conference road games Tuesday, Jan. 31 during a trip to Orange City. The Pioneer girls fell to host MOC-Floyd Valley 54-42 and the boys lost to the Dutch in a narrow 78-75 contest.

Titans split home games with Mustangs

The Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire girls and boys basketball teams split a home doubleheader with Newell-Fonda on Tuesday, Jan .31. The Titan girls lost to the Mustangs 59-56 while the boys earned a narrow 57-56 win.

Indians avenge earlier loss, storm past Tornadoes

Spirit Lake boys coach Dr. David Smith said the sixth-ranked (3A) Indians' 70-64 loss to Storm Lake on Jan. 13 was probably their worst loss of the season, saying "it was only a six-point game, but it felt worse than that."
On Tuesday night, the Indians exacted a bit of revenge, handling the Tornadoes from start to finish to win a 75-59 game in front of the Spirit Lake faithful.

Third-quarter run lifts Indians to win over Tornadoes

Spirit Lake led visiting Storm Lake 25-17 at the half Monday night in a Lakes Conference girls hoops showdown.
After a pair of free throws cut the Indians' lead to six, Spirit Lake followed with a 10-0 third-quarter run that proved to be the difference, as the hosts held on for a 50-39 over Storm Lake.

Stumbo scores career high, leads Pioneers to win over Orabs

Okoboji freshman Kallyn Stumbo has been a stat-stuffer all season long, leading the Pioneers to a solid regular season. That trend continued Monday night, as the frosh scored a career-high 32 points in a 59-43 win over Sheldon in Milford.
Stumbo tacked on 10 rebounds, six assists, six steals and a blocked shot, and knocked down four first-half three-pointers to help her team overcome a slow start.

10 DHR agents surpass $1M in sales

John and Kathi Hinn of Dowden-Hinn Realtors, announced that Keith Diekevers is the 2016 DHR top producer. Diekevers has been one of the top-producing agents the last seven years. This is the first year he is the top producer for Dowden-Hinn Realtors. Diekevers wishes to say "thank you" to all the clients who have helped make this possible.
John and Kathi Hinn of Dowden-Hinn Realtors also released the names of 10 agents that were multi-million dollar producers in 2016.

Backpack Programs receive donations

Northwest Bank locations in Milford, Arnolds Park and Spirit Lake focused on raising funds and food for the area schools' Backpack Programs in November. Northwest Bank offered to match funds up to $1,000 each for the Okoboji and Spirit Lake programs and encouraged community members and business to donate to this great cause.

Petrick honored for 20 years

Dave Petrick, Certified Professional Photographer, (CPP), owner of Dave Petrick Photo in Spirit Lake and lead adjunct instructor of the photography program at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, attended the Professional Photographers of Iowa, (PPI) Winter Convention, held in Des Moines on Jan. 20-23.
Petrick received his 20-year pin for being a PPI member for 20 consecutive years at the awards banquet Sunday evening.

Patrick Miles Wascher, 40, of Lake Park was charged with dark windows, no insurance, no valid driver's license, possession of marijuana, and a prescription drug violation at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at 2048 Highway 9 in Spirit Lake.
Dennis Lee Wendel, 73, of Lake Park was charged with driving while license is under suspension and operating a vehicle without a registration card at 10:47 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at 219th Avenue and Highway 9 in Spirit Lake.

REVIEW: Cats captivate PLAC audience

The Alley Cats made their third appearance at the Pearson Lakes Art Center and gave their best performance here to date.
The quartet is famous for singing '50s and '60s doo-wop music a cappella. They have performed all over the world for the past 30 years and those of us who have seen their show know why they are so popular.

Type 1 diabetes kids, family fun day planned

Everyone is invited on Sunday, Feb. 5 to the Corner Lanes Bowling Center in Spirit Lake for a type 1 diabetes kids and family fun day.
It provides an opportunity to connect with peers who have type 1 diabetes (T1D) and their families. Learn about summer camp opportunities. Enjoy meeting new friends, free pizza and beverage. Bowling is available for those who chose to enjoy the sport.
