Spirit Lake boys win 5th straight, take Lakes Conference lead

 

Spirit Lake’s boys basketball team secured its fifth consecutive win and moved to the top of the Lakes Conference standings with a dominant road victory over Cherokee on Friday, Jan. 20. The Indians bashed the Braves 84-43 in Cherokee.

Spirit Lake Park boys compete at Bishop Heelan Invite

 

Spirit Lake Park’s boys wrestling team competed at the 2023 Bishop Heelan Invitational held Saturday, Jan. 21 at O’Gorman Field House in Sioux City. The Indians totaled 12 team points to place 15th overall.

Okoboji girls basketball suffers 5th straight loss

 

After seeing its five-game winning streak snapped earlier this month, Okoboji’s girls basketball team suffered a fifth consecutive loss this weekend, as the Pioneers dropped a Siouxland Conference road game to Rock Valley on Saturday, Jan. 20. The Rockets defeated the Pioneers 60-54 in Rock Valley.

Okoboji boys basketball suffers 7th straight loss

 

Okoboji’s boys basketball team suffered its seventh consecutive loss since coming back from the holiday break, as the Pioneers fell to Siouxland Conference rival Rock Valley on Saturday, Jan. 21. The Rockets topped the Pioneers 54-36 in Rock Valley.

Rock Valley held a 14-11 lead after one quarter and steadily built its advantage throughout, outscoring the Pioneers 14-8 in the second, 11-8 in the third and 15-9 in the fourth.

Indians drop conference clash with No. 12 Cherokee

 

Spirit Lake’s girls basketball team dropped a Lakes Conference road game to 12th-ranked (3A) Cherokee on Friday, Jan. 20. The Braves edged the Indians 63-58 in Cherokee.

Boji boys suffer road loss to Sioux Center

 

Okoboji’s boys basketball team played much better than it has since the holiday break, according to coach Alex Speilman, but the Pioneers struggled late in a 20-point loss to Sioux Center on Friday, Jan. 20. The Warriors defeated the Pioneers 60-40 in Sioux Center.

Okoboji girls drop road game to No. 11 Sioux Center

 

Okoboji’s girls basketball team suffered a Siouxland Conference road loss to No. 11 (3A) Sioux Center on Friday, Jan. 20. The Warriors defeated the Pioneers 69-39 in Sioux Center.

The Pioneers hung with the Warriors for a quarter, as Sioux Center held a slim 18-17 lead after one quarter of play. Sioux Center made its push in the second quarter, outscoring Okoboji 19-5 to take a 37-22 lead into the break.

Wolves fall to Blackhawks in double overtime

 

Harris-Lake Park’s boys basketball team hung with War Eagle Conference foe Hinton for five quarters, but the Blackhawks pulled away with a 19-2 score in double overtime to top the Wolves 72-55 in Hinton.

Harris-Lake Park’s girls basketball team ran into tough competition Friday, Jan. 20 in a War Eagle Conference road game with 15th-ranked (2A) Hinton. The Blackhawks defeated the Wolves 65-35 in Hinton.

Wolves come up short in road loss to Falcons

 

Harris-Lake Park’s boys basketball team battled but ultimately fell in a War Eagle Conference clash with West Sioux on Tuesday, Jan. 17. The Falcons defeated the Wolves 60-54 in Hawarden.

Wolves fall to Falcons in War Eagle road trip

 

Harris-Lake Park’s girls basketball team suffered a fourth consecutive loss during a War Eagle Conference road trip to West Sioux on Tuesday, Jan. 17. The Falcons topped the Wolves 56-47 in Hawarden.

A second-half scoring slump caused Harris-Lake Park to slip too far behind after playing to a 29-24 halftime deficit.

Okoboji boys fall to Wildcats in Milford

 

Okoboji’s boys basketball team fell behind early in a lopsided loss to Siouxland Conference foe West Lyon on Tuesday, Jan. 17. The Wildcats topped the Pioneers 86-42 in Milford.

West Lyon outscored the Pioneers 25-10 in the opening frame and built a 45-24 lead at the break. The Wildcats continued to pour it on in the second half, outscoring Okoboji 19-10 in the third and 22-8 in the fourth.

A second-quarter scoring slump cost Okoboji’s girls basketball dearly in a Siouxland Conference home loss to West Lyon on Tuesday, Jan. 17. The Wildcats outscored the Pioneers 12-3 in the second quarter of a 49-36 victory in Milford.

Spirit Lake Knights of Columbus crowns youth free throw champions

 

Area girls and boys ages 9 to 14 participated in the 2023 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship this month, and eight earned the right to compete at the district level. Iowa Great Lakes Council 5043 in Spirit Lake and Paul Katzfey, EXIT Realty Midwest, sponsored the local competition at Bedell Family YMCA, drawing kids from the Lakes area to enjoy positive and healthy competition with other youth.
