SLPO girls extend win streak to seven games


Spirit Lake Park-Okoboji’s girls soccer squad continued its incredible season in a road match with Unity Christian on Monday, May 8. The SLPO girls extended their winning streak to seven games with a 7-4 victory over the Knights in Orange City.

Okoboji girls golf competes at Sheldon


Okoboji’s girls golf team competed in a Siouxland Conference meet and finished another at Sheldon on Monday, May 8.

Weather interrupted a meet which began Thursday, May 4 at Rolling Hills Country Club in Hull. The Siouxland Conference squads finished the meet at Sheldon.

Boji boys golf hosts Siouxland Conference meet


Okoboji’s boys golf team hosted an 18-hole Siouxland Conference meet Monday, May 8 at Emerald Hills Golf Course in Arnolds Park. The Pioneers struggled on their home course, carding a 183 to place seventh on the front nine and a 184 to place eighth on the back.

They finished the Siouxland Conference season in fifth place overall.

Harris-Lake Park boys golf earns win over Hinton


Harris-Lake Park’s boys golf team earned a narrow victory over War Eagle Conference rival Hinton Monday, May 8 at Silver Lake Country Club in Lake Park. The Wolves carded a combined round of 177 to edge the Blackhawks’ total of 181.

Harris-Lake Park’s girls golf team dropped a close contest to Hinton on Monday, May 8. The Blackhawks edged the Wolves 212 to 219 at Silver Lake Country Club in Lake Park.

Rylie Wittrock earned medalist honors and led Harris-Lake Park with a 50. Madeline Greve tied for fourth with a 54. Calleejo Sohn carded a 56 and Lilli Gunderson carded a 59 to round out the Wolves’ scoring. Emma Bondhus shot a 66 and Danika deBoom shot a 68 on the day.

Spirit Lake boys golf places third at Carroll

Spirit Lake’s boys golf team earned a third-place team finish at a meet hosted by Kuemper Catholic Saturday, May 6 in Carroll. The Indians combined to shoot a 334, finishing behind runner-up Spencer (324) and champion Kuemper Catholic (315).

SLPO boys soccer drops home game to Storm Lake


Spirit Lake Park-Okoboji’s boys soccer team held a halftime lead but dropped a home contest to Lakes Conference rival Storm Lake on Thursday, May 4. The Tornadoes topped SLPO 2-1 at Okoboji High School in Milford.

Despite the loss, SLPO coach Alan Ditsworth said the contest was one of his team’s best performances of the season.

SLO girls tennis claims 15th straight Lakes Conference dual crown


With a dominant win over Estherville Lincoln Central on Thursday, May 4, Spirit Lake-Okoboji’s girls tennis team claimed its 15th consecutive Lakes Conference dual meet championship. SLO topped the Midgets 9-0 on senior night at Speier Park in Okoboji.

Spirit Lake-Okoboji’s boys tennis team swept Lakes Conference rival Estherville Lincoln Central on Thursday, May 4. SLO mauled the Midgets 9-0 in Estherville.

In singles, Caleb Frostestad defeated Caleb Young (10-2); Evan Beck defeated Brenden Lundgren (11-9), Paul Conover defeated Matthew Valen (10-4); Luke Schneider defeated Julio Barajas (10-4); Alex Profit defeated Rhett Goebel (10-1); and Connor Cunningham defeated Brayden Milstead (10-2).

SLPO girls soccer trounces Tornadoes


Spirit Lake Park-Okoboji’s girls soccer team earned its sixth consecutive victory with a dominant performance against Lakes Conference rival Storm Lake on Thursday, May 4. SLPO trounced the Tornadoes 5-2 in Storm Lake.

Harris-Lake Park boys track places third at Kingsley


Harris-Lake Park’s boys track team earned a third-place finish at a meet hosted by Kingsley-Pierson on Thursday, May 4. The Wolves scored 68 team points and earned seven top-three finishes, including a pair of gold medals.

Ethan Harper won the 200-meter dash in 23.55 seconds. He placed second in the high jump after clearing the bar at 5 feet, 10 inches, and placed third in the 100-meter dash in 11.87 seconds.

Harris-Lake Park’s girls track team competed at a meet hosted by Kingsley-Pierson/Woodbury Central on Thursday, May 4. The Wolves competed in five events and placed sixth before the meet was called due to lightning.

Harris-Lake Park’s boys golf squad carded the low round at a War Eagle Conference triangular held Thursday, May 4 at Sanborn. The Wolves shot a combined score of 172 to defeat MMCRU (176) and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (184).

Harris-Lake Park’s girls golf team hit the road for a War Eagle Conference triangular held Monday, May 8 at Sanborn. The Wolves carded a combined score of 234 to finish behind Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (204) and MMCRU (208).

Rylie Wittrock was the runner-up medalist and led Harris-Lake Park with her round of 51. Madeline Greve was the fourth-place medalist with her round of 54. Callejo Sohn carded a 63 and Danika deBoom carded a 66. Emma Bondhus carded an 84 for the Wolves.

As an outdoor writer here in Iowa, I feel it’s a good idea to subscribe to the Iowa DNR’s press releases and updates. In that way, stuff that I think is important I can get out to readers. Often, I read reports of people caught breaking hunting and fishing laws. I truly believe these lawbreakers are destroying the natural resources that all of us who have fishing and hunting licenses have the opportunity to enjoy.

First trip crappies


Spring came, winter returned, then spring re-entered the picture. People who like to fish are optimistic that the warmer weather will stay with us this time, and that means it’s time to think about going fishing. For many of us, the first fishing trip of the open water season is in search of crappies.
