DNR confirms chronic wasting disease in three new counties

Chronic wasting disease was confirmed in 96 deer that were tested during the 2022 monitoring season, including deer from three new counties – Jasper, Grundy, and Lucas. With the addition of Jasper County, chronic wasting disease has again come into central Iowa.

MADD, Iowa DNR team up for boating BUI and ATV DUI prevention campaign

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Illinois volunteers and staff are teaming up with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to promote safe boating and ATV seasons and to educate about the dangers of operating a boat, watercraft, and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) while impaired by alcohol or other drugs.

ON 2 STATE: Spirit Lake boys track sends 14 events to the Blue Oval


Last year’s Class 2A state champion Spirit Lake will look to establish itself as a force in Class 3A this year after qualifying 14 events to the 2023 Iowa High School Track & Field Championships slated for Thursday-Saturday, May 18-20 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. In sending 14 events to the Blue Oval, the Indians secured yet another district championship at the Class 3A state qualifying meet held Thursday, May 11 at Northwestern College in Orange City.

Okoboji boys win district title, send 12 to state


Okoboji’s boys track team brought home a district title and secured eight automatic bids to the state meet following the Class 2A state qualifying meet held Thursday, May 11 at Sheldon. The Pioneers tacked on four more at-large bids to push their total to 12 qualifiers for the state meet slated for Thursday-Saturday, May 18-20 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Turner breaks scoring record in win over Orabs


Spirit Lake Park-Okoboji freshman Claire Turner broke the program’s single-season goals record in a dominant home win over Sheldon/Sibey-Ocheyedan on Monday, May 15. Behind Turner’s four goals, SLPO defeated the Orabs 6-1 at Okoboji High School in Milford — pushing their win streak to nine games.

The previous record of 26 goals was set by Katy Brevik in 2015.

SLPO boys soccer advances in postseason


Spirit Lake Park-Okoboji’s boys soccer team advanced in postseason play with a victory over MOC-Floyd Valley on Monday, May 15. SLPO downed the Dutchmen 2-0 in Orange City.

Harris-Lake Park’s boys track team ended its season at the Class 1A state qualifying meet held Thursday, May 11 at North Union High School in Armstrong. The Wolves did not advance any events to the state track meet, but had several solid performances, according to head coach Lane Gunderson

Spirit Lake boys golf ends season at Spencer


Spirit Lake’s boys golf season came to an end Tuesday, May 9 at the Class 3A sectional tournament held at Spencer Golf & Country Club in Spencer. The Indians carded a combined round of 338 to finish in sixth place — 17 strokes behind third-place qualifier Humboldt.

Okoboji’s girls golf season ends at Emmetsburg


Okoboji’s girls golf season ended at the first round of regional tournament play held Friday, May 12 at Five Island Golf Course in Emmetsburg. The Pioneers carded a combined round of 425 to place fourth.

Karli Fife led the Pioneers with her round of 102.

“Pretty disappointing finish to what was a good season,” Okoboji coach Jeremy Wollenburg said.

Harris-Lake Park’s girls golf season ends at Primghar


Harris-Lake Park’s girls golf team saw its season come to a close at the Class 1A regional tournament held Friday, May 12 at Primghar Golf & Country Club in Primghar. The Wolves carded a combined round of 449 to place fifth among the eight teams present.

SLO boys tennis team advances to substate final


Spirit Lake-Okoboji’s boys tennis team advanced to the next round of substate play after winning a pair of duals on a drizzly Friday afternoon in Spirit Lake. SLO defeated Estherville Lincoln Central and Sergeant Bluff-Luton on May 12 to advance to the substate final against Spencer on Wednesday, May 17.

SLO opened with a 5-0 win over ELC.

SLPO boys soccer drops home contest to Wolfpack


Spirit Lake Park-Okoboji’s boys soccer team dropped a home game to Western Christian on Thursday, May 11. The Wolfpack topped SLPO 2-1 at the Bedell Family YMCA Soccer Complex in Spirit Lake.

“We battled Western extremely well,” SLPO coach Alan Ditsworth said. “They are a fast and aggressive team. I think this game prepared us well for our playoff game.”

SLPO girls hot streak continues with win over Wolfpack


Spirit Lake Park-Okoboji’s girls soccer team blanked Western Christian in the second half of Thursday night’s contest to push its win streak to eight games. SLPO defeated the Wolfpack 4-2 in Hull.

Claire Turner scored two of her three goals in the first half to keep the two squads even at 2-2 at the half. Turner’s third goal at the 42nd minute gave SLPO a 3-2 lead and an insurance goal by Lexie Powers in the 71st minute made it a 4-2 final.
