SULTANS OF SWING: Blankers' home run highlights dominant victory for Pioneers over Titans


A home run by junior Roy Blankers provided the highlight for Okoboji’s dominant home victory over GT/RA in non-conference baseball action Wednesday, May 24. The Pioneers had the Titans in dire straits early in a 15-4 victory at Okoboji High School in Milford.

Okoboji’s first-year coach Andy Wolf said his squad gained momentum following their 7-6 victory over Pocahontas Area the previous night.

Spirit Lake baseball blasts Rebels for third straight win


Spirit Lake’s baseball team improved to 3-0 on the season after a stellar outing against Sioux Central on Wednesday, May 24. The Indians blasted the Rebels 13-2 in Spirit Lake.

Wolves whoop Hawks in Lake Park


Harris-Lake Park’s baseball team put a whooping on Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Friday, May 26. The Wolves soared past the Hawks 10-0 in Lake Park.

“Lucas Ahrenstorff set the tone for us all night,” Harris-Lake Park coach Jared Rahe said. “He threw a gem. We had a great approach at the plate against a very good pitcher. I felt like it was our best baseball this year.”

SLO’s Straus places third at state singles tournament


Spirit Lake-Okoboij’s Catherine Straus capped her sensational high school tennis career with a third-place finish at the 2023 Class 1A Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union State Singles and Doubles Tennis Tournament held Friday-Saturday, May 26-27 at Byrnes Park Tennis Center in Waterloo.

Straus went 3-1 during the two-day tournament, her only loss coming to eventual state runner-up Alli Hagness of Columbus Catholic.

Area baseball teams compete in Dickinson County Classic


Spirit Lake, Okoboji and Harris-Lake Park baseball teams battled for county bragging rights in the 2023 Dickinson County Classic held Saturday, May 27 in Lake Park. Spirit Lake went 2-0 on the day, while Okoboji went 1-1 and Harris-Lake Park went 0-2.

The Indians opened with a 15-0 win over Harris-Lake Park. Spirit Lake scored five runs in the second, third and fourth innings.

Pioneers outlast Mustangs in baseball barnburner


Okoboji and George-Little Rock combined for 40 runs in a baseball barnburner on Friday, May 26. In the end of the 3-hour contest, the Pioneers proved they had more firepower in a 24-16 victory over the Mustangs in George.

Okoboji softball earns first win of 2023


Okoboji’s softball team, after suffering back-to-back losses to open the season, collected its first win with a dominant display against George-Little Rock on Friday, May 26. The Pioneers defeated the Mustangs 12-0 in George.

Wolves softball drops home game to Hawks


Harris-Lake Park’s softball team dropped a War Eagle Conference home game to Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on Friday, May 26. The Hawks topped the Wolves 13-6 in Lake Park.

Spirit Lake’s hot start cools with loss to Wildcats


After outscoring its opponents 47-12 during a 3-0 start to the season, Spirit Lake’s baseball team suffered its first defeat in a road game with West Lyon. The Wildcats topped the Indians 10-0 in Larchwood.

“A really good test against a good program,” Spirit Lake coach Ross Ackerman said. “I thought it was really just one inning that fell apart for us. Otherwise, just good to see what we need to work on to get better. Their pitcher did a great job of keeping us unbalanced.”

Indians drop road game to West Lyon


Spirit Lake’s softball team suffered a one-run loss to West Lyon in a non-conference road trip Thursday, May 25. The Wildcats scored the only run of the game in the first inning of a 1-0 win over the Indians in Larchwood.

Okoboji softball falls to Lions in Milford


Okoboji’s softball team dropped a Siouxland Conference home contest to Central Lyon on Thursday, May 25. The Lions topped the Pioneers 14-3 in Milford.

Harris-Lake Park softball falls to Rebels


Harris-Lake Park’s softball team suffered a lopsided loss to Sioux Central on Thursday, May 25. The Wolves fell 13-1 to the Rebels in Sioux Rapids.

Harris-Lake Park plated its lone run in the opening frame. The Rebels scored four in the first, six in the second and three in the third to end the night early.

Payton Reimers collected the Wolves’ lone hit, going 1-2 with a single. Addison Hibma stole a base and scored a run.

Indians suffer loss to No. 4 Mustangs


Spirit Lake’s softball team suffered its first loss of the season to fourth-ranked (1A) Newell-Fonda on Wednesday, May 24. The Mustangs topped the Indians 5-2 in Spirit Lake.

“I thought our girls played really hard,” Spirit Lake coach Jason Schneider said. “We were able to get a lot of runners on, but we didn't execute very well with runners in scoring position. I thought Lauren Borthwick battled really well in the circle and our defense played really well behind her.”

Schneider’s slugging sends Indians to win


Spirit Lake sophomore JD Schneider launched three nukes in a dominant offensive display Tuesday, May 23 against Forest City. Schneider went 4-4 on the night with eight RBI and four runs scored. His trio of round-trippers sent the Indians on to a 21-6 victory in Spirit Lake.

Spirit Lake’s softball team opened the 2023 season with a dominant home win over Forest City on Tuesday, May 23. The hosts topped the visitors 19-0 in Spirit Lake.

Wolves baseball wallops Titans


Harris-Lake Park’s baseball team put a beating on former Cornbelt Conference rival GT/RA on Tuesday, May 23. The Wolves whooped the Titans 17-4 in Ruthven.

“We got a great pitching performance from Caleb Hemphill tonight,” Harris-Lake Park coach Jared Rahe said. “He really battled on a mound that wasn’t in great condition. I felt like we really took advantage of their mistakes and had some key two-out hits. It was great to see us score some runs like that.”
