Bat survey looking for volunteers

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Iowa State University are looking for volunteers interested in performing night time surveys for bats in Dubuque, Pocahontas, Marshall, Franklin and Butler counties.

The survey monitors bat occurrence in key areas of the state. It began in response to declining bat population from White Nose Syndrome, among other challenges.

CHAMPIONS: Okoboji boys 4x800-meter relay wins Class 2A state title, Pioneers earn four medals


Okoboji’s boys track team brought 12 events to the 2023 Iowa High School State Track & Field Champions and, following three days of competition, brought four medals — including the Class 2A 4x800-meter relay championship — back to Milford. The Pioneers totaled 27 team points to finish seventh overall in the team standings.

Spirit Lake boys earn four medals at state track meet


Spirit Lake’s boys track team earned four medals at the 2023 Iowa High School State Track & Field Championships held Thursday-Saturday, May 18-20 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. The Indians brought 14 events to the state meet and, despite a couple of disappointing results, performed well throughout the three-day competition, according to coach Brad Travis.

Spirit Lake’s Lauren Travis, Katelyn Krieger and Reese Keenan earned medals at the 2023 Iowa High School State Track & Field Championships held Thursday-Saturday, May 18-20 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. The Indians brought 10 events to the state meet and left with plenty more memories.

Pioneers sprinters earn three medals in Des Moines


Okoboji’s girls track team sprinted to three medals at the 2023 Iowa High School State Track & Field Championships held Thursday-Saturday, May 18-20 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. The Pioneers earned medals in the 4x200-meter relay, the 4x100-meter relay and the sprint medley relay at the Blue Oval.

Niemeier medals for Harris-Lake Park girls track


Harris-Lake Park sent one athlete to the state track meet and brought one medal back home to Lake Park. High-jumper Kendal Niemeier battled the best of Class 1A and earned a sixth-place finish after clearing the bar at 5 feet, 2 inches during the 2023 Iowa High School State Track & Field Championships held Thursday-Saturday, May 18-20 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Niemeier cleared the bar — tying her personal best — on her third and final opportunity.

SLO girls tennis advances to state tournament with win over Crusaders

Spirit Lake-Okoboji’s girls tennis team will make a return trip to the state tournament this season after earning a convincing 5-1 win over Bishop Heelan in the Class 1A regional tournament final held Saturday, May 20 at Speier Park in Okoboji.

SLO boys postseason run ends at Spencer


Spirit Lake-Okoboji’s boys tennis season ended with a loss to Spencer in the Class 1A substate final held Wednesday, May 17. The Tigers topped the Indians 5-0 at Spencer.

Spirit Lake girls golf ends season at Storm Lake


Spirit Lake’s girls golf season came to a close Wednesday, May 17 at the Class 3A regional golf tournament final played at Lake Creek Country Club in Storm Lake. The Indians carded a combined round of 422 to finish ninth on the day — 41 strokes behind runner-up MOC-Floyd Valley and 83 strokes behind champion Clear Lake.

SLO girls tennis tops Cherokee in regional tournament


Spirit Lake-Okoboji’s girls tennis team topped Lakes Conference rival Cherokee Tuesday, May 16 to advance to the next round of postseason play. SLO earned a 5-1 win over the Braves at Speier Park in Okoboji.

In singles, Catherine Straus defeated Kenna Mongan (6-3, 6-4); Abbie Oleson defeated Alise Anderson (6-0, 6-0), Emma Straus defeated Paris Mendez (6-0, 6-0); Mikayla Mingus defeated Aery Mizner (6-1, 6-2); and Izzie Wycoff defeated Ava Anderson (6-2, 6-0).

Tigers plate 5 late in win over Wolves

Harris-Lake Park kept Friday’s baseball battle with Spencer close for six innings, but a five-run seventh frame put the Tigers on top 7-0 on May 19 in Lake Park.

Spencer scored a run in the first and another in the third to take a 2-0 lead. That score remained until the top half of the seventh.

Harris-Lake Park boys drop baseball season opener

Harris-Lake Park’s baseball team held an early lead in its season-opening contest with Estherville Lincoln Central, but the Midgets managed to maneuver their way to a win on Tuesday, May 16. ELC defeated the Wolves 7-4 in Estherville.

Straus earns second Lakes Conference Player of the Year award

The Lakes Conference has named Spirit Lake-Okoboji senior Catherine Straus as its girls tennis Player of the Year. Straus had a conference record of 9-0 at No. 1 singles, tallying 190 points. That put her 55 points ahead of Kenna Mongan of Cherokee for the top spot. Straus was the Lakes Conference Tournament champion at No. 1 singles and has an overall singles record of 21-2.

Bass Federation’s Student Angler Federation Iowa State Championship held Saturday

The third annual Bass Federation’s (TBF) Student Angler Federation (SAF) Iowa State Championship, held Saturday, May 20 for the first time ever on the Okoboji chain of lakes, turned out to be quite a shoot-out in the high school division (grades 9-12). High skies, sunshine and a light variable wind welcomed the contestants as they left the Emerson Bay Boat Ramp area at 7 a.m.

DNR confirms chronic wasting disease in three new counties

Chronic wasting disease was confirmed in 96 deer that were tested during the 2022 monitoring season, including deer from three new counties – Jasper, Grundy, and Lucas. With the addition of Jasper County, chronic wasting disease has again come into central Iowa.
