WIN & ADVANCE: Okoboji baseball advances in district play with win over Orabs


Okoboji’s baseball team began postseason play with a victory over Siouxland Conference rival Sheldon on Saturday, July 1. After falling behind 1-0, the Pioneers scored three runs in the second inning and five runs in the fourth to defeat the Orabs 9-2 at Okoboji High School in Milford.

It was the final home game for Okoboji seniors Logan Duvall and Ryan Pyle.

Harris-Lake Park softball suffers playoff loss to Titans


After surrendering 14 runs in the second inning of its playoff game with Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire on Friday, June 30, Harris-Lake Park’s softball season came to a close in the first round of postseason play. The Titans topped the Wolves 15-2 in Ruthven.

Okoboji’s softball team struggled to keep up with the offensive firepower of MOC-Floyd Valley on Friday, June 30. The Dutchmen defeated the Pioneers 12-1 in Orange City.

“MOC-Floyd Valley hit the ball well tonight,” Okoboji coach Kate Perrin said. “We had some good hits early on, but couldn’t capitalize to score more runs. Errors really hurt us tonight.”

Okoboji’s softball team suffered a nonconference home loss to Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire on Wednesday, June 28. The Titans scored a run in the first, two in the third, one in the fifth and one in the seventh to top the Pioneers 5-1 in Milford.

Okoboji’s lone run came in the bottom half of the final frame.

Spirit Lake baseball suffers road loss to Spencer


Spirit Lake’s baseball team was on the wrong side of a lopsided contest with Spencer on Wednesday, June 28. The Indians fell 16-1 to the Tigers in Spencer.

“Was not inductive of us and how we play baseball at all,” Spirit Lake coach Ross Ackerman said. “Really didn’t play our game or show any resemblance of what we are capable of, which is disappointing, but hoping to fix it before district play.”

Spirit Lake’s baseball team fell to Sioux Center in a nonconference road game played Tuesday, June 27. The Warriors topped the Indians 3-2 in Sioux Center.

“Still not quite playing like we know how,” Spirit Lake coach Ross Ackerman said. “Our bats are in a bit of a slump or at least stringing together hits has been an issue for a couple of games. Working on fixing that issue in practice and trying to build confidence.”

Okoboji Blue Water Festival receives Sustainability Initiative Award


The Okoboji Blue Water Festival, which is held annually at Preservation Plaza on the shores of West Lake Okoboji on the second Saturday of August, recently received the Sustainability Initiative Award for a small market from the Iowa Travel Industry Partners (ITIP) at the ITIP Summer Celebration Annual Meeting on Monday, June 12 in Cedar Falls.
