Okoboji runners compete at Chris Smith Invitational


Okoboji’s girls and boys cross country teams ran well at the Chris Smith Invitational held Thursday, Sept. 14 at Sioux Rapids. The girls — led by sixth-place finisher Maryn Frein — earned a runner-up team finish while the boys — led by individual champion Evan Osler — placed third overall.

GRIDIRON GLANCE: Harris-Lake Park (3-1) vs. West Bend-Mallard (2-2)


Harris-Lake Park is riding a three-game winning streak heading into this Friday’s road contest with West Bend-Mallard. The Wolves most recent victory was a nail-biter over Newell-Fonda in which Harris-Lake Park scored a last-second touchdown to break an 18-18 tie to secure a 26-18 victory in Lake Park.

Wolves volleyball goes 0-3 at Graettinger tournament


Harris-Lake Park’s volleyball team suffered three losses at a tournament hosted by Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire on Saturday, Sept. 16. The Wolves fell 2-0 to GTRA and West Bend-Mallard, and dropped a 2-1 match to Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in Graettinger.

Spirit Lake runners compete at Sioux Rapids


Spirit Lake’s girls and boys cross country teams competed at the Chris Smith Invitational held Thursday, Sept. 14 at Sioux Rapids.

The boys  — led by runner-up Brandon Hughes — won the team title with 67 points. Hughes placed second behind Okoboji’s Evan Osler. The Spirit Lake junior finished the race in 16 minutes, 24.77 seconds.

Dietrich Dirks joined Hughes in the top 10, placing 10th in 17:34.51. Jace Hungerford placed 11th in 17:36.25.

Okoboji drops Siouxland Conference road trip to Sheldon


Okoboji’s volleyball team suffered a Siouxland Conference road loss to Sheldon on Thursday, Sept. 14. The Orabs topped the Pioneers 3-0 (32-30, 25-17, 25-16) in Sheldon.

Harris-Lake Park’s volleyball suffered a War Eagle Conference road loss to MMCRU on Tuesday, Sept. 12. The Royals defeated the Wolves 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-9) in Marcus.

"We had a lot of good things happen and went on a run that gave us a lead but couldn't hold the lead on serve receive,” Harris-Lake Park coach April Buss said. “We have a lot of talents and we keep a positive attitude with the rest of the week ahead of us."

Fall is big fish time


Autumn is in the air. The geese are honking, and the leaves are changing to brighter colors.  And trophy anglers are getting excited. They know that the fall months offer several good reasons to go fishing.  

Paying something forward


As I spent three hours last Thursday evening at the Howard K. Vincent Waterfowl Production Area Dedication, I felt a sense of immense satisfaction that this huge project included so many groups and individuals that had all come together for this one special evening celebration.

I observed folks from all walks of life come together for something that will positively impact the entire area.

DNR TRIP TIP: Check out the Loess Hills at Green Hollow and Blackburn areas


Tucked in to the southern end of the Loess Hills, within eyeshot of I-29 and nearly adjacent to Forney Lake, is the Green Hollow and Blackburn wildlife areas and state park complex in northwest Fremont County.

While not far off the interstate, actually finding the complex has a little “am I going the right way?” feel to it.

Harris-Lake Park’s football team got out to a slow start in its Week 3 road contest with Northwood-Kensett on Friday, Sept. 8. However, the Wolves – led by senior quarterback Lucas Ahrenstorff — made enough plays down the stretch to earn a 34-27 victory over the Vikings.
