HLP girls ninth at St. Marys’ meet

Harris-Lake Park girls track and field competed in Storm Lake St. Marys’ home meet on Friday at the Buena Vista campus, placing ninth as a team.
14 of the Wolves’ 20 team points came from high jump as Kendal Niemeier and Gracie Gunderson both cleared four feet and 10 inches to place second and third respectively. Bella Barnhart finished eighth in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 6:11.

Dicks named next Spirit Lake boys basketball coach

A familiar face for Spirit Lake boys basketball will continue to occupy the sidelines as assistant coach Brady Dicks has been announced as the next head basketball coach.
 “I love basketball, and I love the guys I’ve worked with over these last four years coaching at Spirit Lake,” Dicks said. “I’ve always envisioned leading a program. The opportunity presented itself, and I’m fortunate and excited to be the boys basketball coach.”

SL-O boys tennis defeat Cherokee to open season

Spirit Lake-Okoboji boys tennis opened their 2025 at home on Thursday, April 10 with a 9-0 win over Cherokee despite some chilly wind.  
“The guys started the season extremely strong today by sweeping the singles and doubles,” Coach Dan Taylor said. “In singles our guys handled the gusty winds well with solid footwork and smart decisions when making shots. And in doubles they were able to serve well and win points at the net. “

Shorthanded SL-O tennis fifth at Dennis Price Tournament

Spirit Lake-Okoboji girls tennis was down most of their Spirit Lake athletes due to prom, yet the Okoboji girls stepped up and placed fifth with 10 team points in the six-team Dennis Price Tournament on Saturday in Spencer. 

Okoboji 4x2 shatters school record, qualifies for Drake Relays

Okoboji girls track and field only ran one race at the Sioux City Relays on Saturday, yet the 4x200 meter relay of Alivia Avery, Riley Meyer, Miley Wells and Krishauna Allen made it a momentous one by running a 1:44.32 to smash a 30-year old school record and qualify for the Drake Relays next week. 

Ehret signs with SDSU Rodeo

Harris-Lake Park senior Kelsey Ehret started riding horses competitively at age 13, and five years later she is taking her rodeo talents to the next level with South Dakota State University. 

Niemeier signs with Morningside basketball

Harris-Lake Park’s Kendal Niemeier helped lead Wolves’ basketball to one of its greatest seasons in program history, and the senior hopes she can continue to elevate her new teammates at Morningside College in Sioux City, signing with the Mustangs on Tuesday, April 1. 

Stecker, Winkel qualify for Drake to highlight SDSU meet

Spirit Lake’s Ethan Stecker and Cooper Winkel took advantage of one last indoor meet at South Dakota State University to put down qualifying 110 meter hurdle times for the Drake Relays on Monday, April 7, the two seniors making their triumphant return to the Blue Oval.

    These are some of the words the Okoboji 4x100 meter relay of Alivia Avery, Riley Meyer, Miley Wells and Krishauna Allen used to describe the flood of thoughts and emotions flowing through them as the set a new Class 2A state record in the event with a time of 48.97 at the 2024 State Track and Field Championships inside Drake Stadium last season in Des Moines.
