Harris-Lake Park baseball sought to end a six-game losing skid as they faced Gehlen Catholic at MOC-Floyd Valley on Friday, June 13, yet couldn’t come up with late runs in a 7-4 loss to the Jays. 
The Wolves struck first with Justus Voss sliding into home for an unearned run. Tayt Huff and Bowden Barnhart delivered RBIs to put HLP up 3-2 after two innings. 

Spirit Lake beat out Cherokee for first conference win

Spirit Lake softball picked up their first Lakes Conference victory of the season with a 9-5 win at Cherokee in five innings, finishing just in time to seek shelter before a storm swept over the Doupe Ball Complex.
The Indians wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, advancing Avery Beisell to third and scoring her off a Faith DeWild double. DeWild soon slid safely home for an unearned run before the end of the first inning. 

Ron Baack “keeps things moving” for 50 years

Ron Baack of Spirit Lake has made it his passion to “keep things moving” at high school track meets for the last 50 years of his life, being recognized for his contribution to the sport by the Iowa Association of Track Officials (IATO) during the state meet in Des Moines last month.

Spirit Lake baseball came into the 2025 season with a goal of winning their first Lakes Conference title since 2020, achieving this feat with a 9-0 five-inning win at Cherokee on Monday just before a storm washed over the field. 
“This was a goal everyone had from the beginning,” coach Ross Ackerman said. “The best part is I felt everyone played a part in winning this conference championship. I’m really proud of the guys, especially our seniors leading the charge this season.”

“You can just tell our girls are getting more confident in the batter's box,” coach Karli Olsen said. “They're seeing pitches better than at the beginning of the season. It’s really exciting to see these at-bats, and they will help us get ready for conference games.”

Okoboji High School Trap Team takes state title

Competing against 10 other high school teams featuring nearly 150 student athletes, the Okoboji trap shooting team captured the Championship at the Iowa Trap Shooting State Tournament held at Ackley on Saturday, May 31.
The Iowa High School League is part of the USA Clay Target League that started in Minnesota with 30 shooters from 3 teams and in 2025 had 39,000 shooters from 2000 teams in 36 states.

Girls tennis springs forward to fall

Since 1956, girls tennis has been sanctioned by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) for competition in the spring. Nearly 70 years later, the sport will take place in the fall in hopes of easing the clutter of spring sports played in Iowa.
