Spirit Lake’s boys basketball team dropped a non-conference road game to Humboldt on Monday, Dec. 5. The Wildcats topped the Indians 83-77 in Humboldt.

Turner ties school 3-point record in Indians’ win over Worthington

 

Spirit Lake junior guard Ella Turner knocked down a school record seven 3-pointers while leading the Indians to a non-conference road win over Worthington (MN) on Monday, Dec. 5. Despite a slow start, the Indians topped the Trojans 78-66 in Worthington.

Wolves rock Royals in Lake Park

 

Harris-Lake Park’s boys basketball team kicked off the season with a 67-54 home win over MMCRU on Tuesday, Dec. 6. The Wolves jumped out to a 20-12 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

Royals hand Wolves War Eagle Conference home loss

Harris-Lake Park fought all night, but the Wolves fell short in a War Eagle Conference girls basketball battle  with MMCRU on Tuesday, Dec. 6. The Royals defeated the Wolves 53-41 in Lake Park.

Okoboji boys drop home game to No. 4 Sioux Center

 

Okoboji’s boys basketball team couldn’t match Sioux Center’s firepower in an 89-39 loss to the fourth-ranked (3A) Warriors Tuesday, Dec. 6 in Milford.

“Sioux Center shot the ball incredibly well,” Okoboji coach Alex Spielman said. “Over 60 percent from the field and almost 50 percent from the 3-point line. Their aggressive play got themselves to the foul line 24 times, making 19. We need to challenge more shots and learn to anticipate defensive rotations.”

Early lead slips in Pioneers’ loss to Warriors

 

Okoboji jumped out to an early lead in a Siouxland Conference girls hoops showdown with Sioux Center on Tuesday, Dec. 6, but the Pioneers could not maintain their advantage in the second half of a 73-59 loss to the Warriors in Milford.

The Pioneers led 16-15 after one quarter and the two squads went into halftime knotted at 35-35. However, the Warriors outscored their hosts 20-7 in the third quarter and salted away the win with an 18-17 score in the fourth.

Ice fishing finally begins – sort of

 

My wife often tells me that I am never satisfied. “You always have something to worry or complain about.” You know what? I’ll admit it. She’s right! It sometimes has something to do with either the Hawkeyes, Vikings or Twins — but then my greatest worries usually revolve around the weather.

Ice fishing ideas

 

Some friends found ice that was safe for ice fishing recently. These are hard-core ice anglers who, as soon as the ice is safe for walking, are walking on it. They’ve been after walleyes, crappies, and bluegills and have had success.  

In conversations with a couple of those anglers, I learned a few of their keys to success.  Some of those keys are early ice things, others will help an angler catch more fish whenever they go ice fishing. Here we go.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Lake Restoration Program is accepting comments on the newly released draft 2022 Lake Restoration Report and 2023 Plan, through Dec. 21.

2023 hunting, fishing licenses on sale Dec. 15

Iowans can begin buying 2023 resident hunting, fishing and other licenses on Dec. 15.  Licenses purchased for 2022 expire on Jan. 10, 2023.

The menu of license options includes the popular Outdoor Combo annual resident hunting/fishing/habitat combo license for $55; the Angler’s Special three-year fishing license for $62; and the Hunter’s Special three-year hunting license with habitat included for $101.

Missouri and Big Sioux River paddlefish license on sale Dec. 15

Iowa anglers can buy the Missouri and Big Sioux River paddlefish license and tags starting Dec. 15 through Jan. 7.

Buy your special paddlefish license and tags on the Iowa DNR online licenses sales website athttps://gooutdoorsiowa.com. A resident license sells for $25.50 and a nonresident license is $49. You must also have a valid Iowa fishing license.

UPSET ALERT: Spirit Lake girls earn double-overtime win over No. 2 Unity Christian

 

Spirit Lake’s girls basketball team — in its third season under head coach Todd Rogers — put the rest of the state on notice with a thrilling double-overtime victory over second-ranked (3A) Unity Christian on Friday, Dec. 3. The Indians topped the Knights 84-79 in Spirit Lake, pushing their win streak to three games.

After falling to MOC-Floyd Valley in the season opener, Spirit Lake’s boys basketball team gave Unity Christian a run in a non-conference matchup played Friday, Dec. 3. However, the Knights were able to edge the Indians 68-64 in Spirit Lake.

Okoboji girls drop home game to No. 2 Lions

 

Okoboji’s girls basketball team battled early but dropped a Siouxland Conference home game to second-ranked 2A) Central Lyon on Thursday, Dec. 2. The Lions topped the Pioneers 60-41 in Milford.

Okoboji’s boys basketball team kicked off the season with a lopsided loss to Siouxland Conference foe Central Lyon on Thursday, Dec. 1. The Lions topped the Pioneers 78-43 in Milford.

Pas leads Pioneers at home tourney

 

Okoboji/HMS senior Sam Pas defended his home turf, winning the 220-pound title at the 2022 Okoboji/HMS Invitational held Saturday, Dec. 3 in Milford. Pas went 4-0 and secured 28 team points to lead the Pioneers to a fifth-place team finish.

Dylan Jones and Noah Strantz earned runner-up finishes at 126 and 160 pounds, respectively, and combined for 42 team points. James Gellerman placed third at 182 pounds and secured 17 team points.
