Spirit Lake Park boys go 0-2 at Graettinger


The Spirit Lake Park boys wrestling team dropped a pair of duals on Monday, Jan. 22. The Indians fell to Sioux Central and Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire at Graettinger.

In their 54-20 loss to Sioux Central, the Indians won two of eight contested matches. At 106 pounds, Tyson DeWall pinned Gavin Maae in 2 minutes, 30 seconds. At 150 pounds, Nick Frangenberg pinned Duane McGregor in 1:50.

Spirit Lake’s boys basketball team earned a win over a team from north of the border on Monday, Jan. 22. The Indians defeated Worthington (Minnesota) 79-59 in Spirit Lake.

Spirit Lake earned a dominant home win over Worthington (Minnesota) in a girls basketball border battle played Monday, Jan. 22. The Indians defeated the Trojans 71-52 in Spirit Lake.

Okobojii/HMS girls place third at East Sac County tournament


The Okoboji/HMS girls wrestling team placed third at a tournament hosted by East Sac County on Monday, Jan. 22. The Pioneers were led by champion Amelia Sirola, who went 3-0 to take the 235-pound title.

Sirola pinned her way to the crown, finishing Ridge View’s Ashlee Sandoval in 1 minute, 3 seconds, Carroll’s Emma Daniels in 3:42 and AC/GC’s Hali Klingenberg in 4:44.

SLP’s Preston, McKeen win at East Sac County tourney


Spirit Lake Park wrestlers Aroura Preston and Cassie McKeen led the Indians with wins at a tournament hosted by East Sac County on Monday, Jan. 22. The Indians placed fifth as a team.

Fifth Annual Camp Autumn Ice Fishing Tournament set for Feb. 10


The fifth annual Camp Autumn Ice Fishing Tournament & Fundraiser is just around the corner with the event taking place at Camp Autumn’s 30-acre private lake on Saturday, Feb. 10. Registration is from 9-10 a.m. and the tournament will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lunch and awarding of prizes will take place following the tournament.

Number of donors to the Chickadee Tax Check-off continues to decline

Last year, more than 5,800 Iowa taxpayers helped boost wildlife conservation with donations to the Fish and Wildlife Fund on their state tax form.

While that may sound like a lot, over the last 20 years, the number of donors has declined by 50 percent and represents only about 0.4 percent of the total taxpayers in Iowa.

Missouri and Big Sioux rivers paddlefish fishing season opens Feb. 1

The paddlefish snagging season on the Missouri and Big Sioux rivers opens Feb. 1 and goes through April 30 (sunrise to sunset).

Anglers fishing for paddlefish must have a valid Iowa fishing license, along with a special paddlefish license and unused transportation tag(s).

Spirit Lake’s boys basketball team secured a third straight Lakes Conference victory and avenged its only conference loss of the season with a convincing home victory over Storm Lake on Tuesday, Jan. 16. The Indians topped the Tornadoes 79-61 in Spirit Lake.

Spirit Lake’s girls basketball team continued its ascent to the top of the Lakes Conference standings with a convincing home win over Storm Lake on Tuesday, Jan. 16. The 12th-ranked (3A) Indians topped the Tornadoes 66-52 in Spirit Lake.

Wolves snap 5-game skid against South O’Brien

 

Harris-Lake Park’s girls basketball team ended its five-game losing streak with a weekend win over War Eagle Conference rival South O’Brien. The Wolves walloped the Wolverines 49-30 in Lake Park.

Okoboji’s boys basketball team battled all night but, ultimately, fell to Sioux Center in a Siouxland Conference clash on Friday, Jan. 19. The Warriors defeated the Pioneers 67-57 in Milford.
