DNR to eliminate invasive rough fish at Nobles Lake

 

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will treat Nobles Lake with a low concentration of rotenone to eliminate rough fish.

Nobles Lake, 95-acre cutoff oxbow lake located in Harrison and Pottawatomie counties on the Missouri River floodplain, was inundated and infested with numerous invasive and river fish species during the floods of 2011 and 2019.

The Dickinson Soil and Water Conservation District, along with the Iowa Soybean Association, Cooperative Farmers Elevator and Iowa State University Extension is hosting a Soil and Profitability Seminar from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27 at the Maser Monarch Lodge located at 22785 Nature Center Road in Okoboji.

Spirit Lake athletes have battled winter weather and top-level competition to start the 2022-23 winter sports season. Indians hoopers and wrestlers are excited to kick off the second half of their seasons and hope to head into the postseason with momentum.

MIDSEASON REPORT: Pioneers look forward to strong second-half runs

 

Okoboji's boys and girls basketball programs, as well as the Okoboji/HMS wrestling team, have seen bright spots to start the 2022-23 winter sports season. While winter weather has interrupted several scheduled contests, it hasn't diminished the Pioneers' competitive spirit as they look ahead to 2023.

MIDSEASON REPORT: Wolves hoopers hope for better weather in 2023

 

Winter weather was not cooperative through the start of the 2022-23 season for Harris-Lake Park's girls and boys basketball programs. Postponements and cancellations have affected the girls team slightly less, as the Wolves posted a 1-4 record In November and December. However, the boys were limited to just two contests in 2022, as the Wolves went 1-1. Both teams are hoping for better weather as they kick off the second half of the season.

NAIFC to hold ice fishing doubleheader Jan. 14-15

 

The North American Ice Fishing Circuit (NAIFC) will once again be coming to the Iowa Great Lakes, but instead of a single day qualifier, competitors will have the chance to fish two single day, two-person team events called the Okoboji Double Header.

Reflecting on some fishing observations

 

The 2022 fishing season is in the books. In conversations with anglers over the past few weeks, several observations have been presented more often than others. Some of these probably can’t be answered with any degree of accuracy, but to this angler, they’re interesting and worthy of some thought. Following are a couple of those observations.

Spirit Lake Christmas Bird Count results

 

On Saturday, Dec. 17, the Spirit Lake Christmas Bird Count (CBC) was held in the Iowa Great Lakes area. Seven intrepid birders showed up at the Iowa Lakeside Lab on the west side of West Okoboji at 7:30 a.m  to be assigned all or part of the four quadrants in the count circle. A couple of people tried owl calls before sun up but neither screech owls nor great horned owls responded to start the list.

Winter community trout stockings start Jan. 14

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will release trout in five locations across Iowa this winter in areas that would not support them during warmer months.

Winter trout stockings are a great place to take kids to catch their first fish. A small split shot and a hook with almost any kind of bait will catch trout.

Iowa DNR accepting comments on proposed new armed forces fishing licenses

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is accepting comments on the proposed new armed forces fishing licenses, through Jan. 24.

2022 Iowa Acts Senate File 581, passed and signed into law on June 17, 2022, broadens the qualifications for who may obtain a lifetime trout fishing license to include Iowa residents who qualify for the disabled veteran homestead credit under section 425.15. The lifetime trout fishing fee is $63.

For the first time in 30 years — and just the third time in school history — Spirit Lake’s boys track team proved to be the best in the state this past spring. The Indians showed a flair for the dramatic while taking the Class 2A team title at the 2022 Iowa High School State Track & Field Championships held Thursday-Saturday, May 19-21 in Des Moines — walloping runner-up Des Moines Christian by 27.5 points.

YEAR IN REVIEW: Sports Story No. 2 — 'Boji boys runners-up; Pioneers' trio earns all-state honors

 

Okoboji ended its historic cross country season with several stellar performances at the 2022 Iowa High School Cross Country Championships held Friday, Oct. 28 at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

The Okoboji boys team, anchored by all-state performances from sophomores Evan Osler and Trigg Heimdal, earned a runner-up finish in the Class 2A team race. The Pioneers' Maryn Frein also earned all-state honors in the Class 2A girls race.

YEAR IN REVIEW: Sports Story No. 3 — Postma wins gold at state track meet

 

Okoboji senior Caleb Postma etched his name into the history books with his performance at the 2022 Iowa High School State Track & Field Championships held Thursday-Saturday, May 19-21 at Drake University in Des Moines. Postma brought a gold medal home to Okoboji after winning the Class 2A boys 400-meter hurdles title Saturday. He finished the race in 54.44 seconds.

YEAR IN REVIEW: Sports Story No. 4 — SLP’s Jon Burnette earns 4th state wrestling medal

 

Spirit Lake Park senior wrester Jon Burnette earned his fourth consecutive spot on the Class 2A podium with his sixth-place finish at 132 pounds at the 2022 Iowa High School State Wrestling Championships held Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 17-19 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The four-time Lakes Conference, sectional and district champion went 2-3 to place sixth at 132 pounds.

YEAR IN REVIEW: Sports Story No. 5 — Okoboji/HMS’ Bronstad returns to Class 2A podium

 

In his return trip to the state wrestling tournament, Okoboji/HMS heavyweight Nick Bronstad had a simple goal — finish higher on the Class 2A podium than he did last season.

In 2021, Bronstad battled through a knee injury — which eventually required surgery — to place eighth at 285 pounds in Class 2A. This season, the Pioneers’ big man was healthy and ready to prove himself as one of the top wrestlers in the state.

Wolves clinch first win of girls hoops season

 

Harris-Lake Park snapped its winless streak with a convincing performance against South O’Brien on Tuesday, Dec. 19. The Wolves topped the Wolverines 60-45 in Lake Park.
