Donations allow DNR to complete wildlife tracking system to monitor migration

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has received two $60,000 donations that will allow it to complete its Motus Wildlife Tracking System Network across the state within the next five years.

The Motus Wildlife Tracking System is a network of coordinated automated radio telemetry stations used to track long-distance movements of small animals. It began in 2013 by Birds Canada, near Toronto.

DNR to host an open house on the Towhead Lake Wildlife Area

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is holding an open house from 4-7 p.m. on Jan. 4 at the Community Room at Fonda City Hall, 104 W. Second Street, in Fonda, to discuss the habitat management, recreation use, wildlife populations and other topics of interest for the Towhead Lake Wildlife Area.

This will be a come-and-go open house format with staff from various programs on hand to answer questions.

WEEKEND WARRIORS: Cassie McKeen leads Spirit Lake Park girls at Spencer tourney


Spirit Lake Park’s Cassie McKeen provided the highlight for the Indians during their weekend road trip to Spencer on Saturday, Dec. 9. McKeen went 2-0 to win the 105-pound bracket, leading her team at the 2023 Spencer Girls Wrestling Invite.

McKeen — who improved to 12-0 on the season — pinned South Central Calhoun’s Chloe Parks in 3 minutes, 59 seconds, and Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley’s Samantha Ramirez in 3:19 to take the 105-pound crown.

Gates wins, Okoboji/HMS girls place fifth at Spencer Invite


Led by Jennesa Gates’ first-place finish, the Okoboji/HMS girls wrestling team totaled 118 points to place fifth at the 2023 Spencer Girls Wrestling Invite held Saturday, Dec. 9 at Spencer. The host Tigers scored 197 points to take the team title.

Okoboji tops Harris-Lake Park in girls hoops


Okoboji defeated Harris-Lake Park in a Dickinson County girls basketball battle held Friday, Dec. 8. The Pioneers whooped the Wolves 48-40 at Okoboji High School in Milford.

Harris-Lake Park jumped out to a 15-8 lead after one quarter and maintained a 23-19 lead at the half. Okoboji crawled back into the contest in the second half, outscoring the Wolves 15-11 to knot the game at 34-34 at the end of the third. The Pioneers salted away the win with a 14-6 score in the fourth.

Spirit Lake girls top Tornadoes


Spirit Lake’s girls basketball team earned a Lakes Conference road win over rival Storm Lake on Friday, Dec. 8. The No. 15 Indians topped the Tornadoes 55-45 in Storm Lake.
