Spirit Lake boys earn conference win over rival Tigers


Spirit Lake’s boys basketball team survived an early onslaught to earn a Lakes Conference win over rival Spencer on Thursday, Jan. 25. The Indians defeated the Tigers 66-59 in Spirit Lake.

Okoboji/HMS wrestlers compete at Siouxland Conference tournament


The Okoboji/HMS boys wrestling team competed at the 2024 Siouxland Conference Tournament held Thursday, Jan. 25 at Sioux Center. The Pioneers placed seventh as a team and put three wrestlers in the top three at their respective weights.

Nathaniel Franklin and James Gellerman each earned runner-up finishes.

Sandman wins conference crown for Spirit Lake Park


Spirit Lake Park senior wrestler Logan Sandman took the 190-pound title at the 2024 Lakes Conference Tournament held Thursday, Jan. 25 at Spencer. The Indians finished in last place as a team while putting three wrestlers into the championship round.

Sandman went 2-0 to win the 190-pound championship. He pinned Estherville Lincoln Central’s Breyden Rodriguez in 1 minute, 38 seconds and Spencer’s Tate Zinn in 3:01.

Okoboji girls earn home win over Unity Christian


Okoboji’s girls basketball team won its second game in a row and collected its third win in its last four games following a thrilling home victory over Unity Christian on Friday, Jan. 26. The Pioneers edged the Knights 58-52 in Milford.

Harris-Lake Park’s boys basketball team extended its losing streak to a season-high four games following a War Eagle Conference road loss to Akron-Westfield on Friday, Jan. 26. The Westerners walloped the Wolves 62-46 in Akron.

SLP’s McKeen, Bennett qualify for state wrestling tournament


Spirit Lake Park will send Cassie McKeen and Audrina Bennett to the girls state wrestling tournament after the Indians’ duo earned top-four finishes at the IGHSAU Super Regional held Friday, Jan. 26 at the Tyson Arena in Sioux City.

McKeen went 5-1 to place third at 105 pounds.

Okoboji/HMS’ Sirola qualifies for girls state wrestling tournament


Okoboji/HMS’ Amelia Sirola will represent the Pioneers’ girls wrestling team at the state tournament after earning a third-place finish at the IGHSAU Super Regional Tournament held Friday, Jan. 26 at Mason City.

Sirola took a loss early in the tournament, but reeled off three straight pins to take third at 235 pounds.

Okoboji boys earn back-to-back wins


Okoboji’s boys basketball team secured back-to-back wins for the first time this season, as the Pioneers edged Sheldon on Thursday, Jan. 25 after earning a 10-point victory over Sibley-Ocheyedan the previous Tuesday. Okoboji defeated Sheldon 66-59 in Sheldon.

Boji girls earn conference win over Orabs


Okoboji’s girls basketball team earned a Siouxland Conference victory over Sheldon on Thursday, Jan. 25. The Pioneers defeated the Orabs 49-33 in Sheldon.

Harris-Lake Park boys fall to Hawks


Harris-Lake Park’s boys basketball team suffered a lopsided loss to Remsen St. Mary’s on Tuesday, Jan. 23. The Hawks topped the Wolves 69-27 in Lake Park.

Wolves coach Tim Jager did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Harris-Lake Park made 9 of 40 (22.5%) shots from the field, including 4 of 17 (23.5%) from beyond the arc. The Wolves made 5 of 7 (71.4%) free throw attempts, pulled down 22 rebounds and had 15 turnovers.

Wolves drop home game to No. 4 Hawks


Harris-Lake Park’s girls basketball team suffered a War Eagle Conference home loss to Remsen St. Mary’s on Tuesday, Jan. 23. The No. 4 (1A) Hawks whooped the Wolves 51-16 in Lake Park.

Spirit Lake Park boys go 0-3 at Estherville duals


The Spirit Lake Park boys wrestling team dropped three duals at a quad hosted by Estherville Lincoln Central on Tuesday, Jan. 23. After dropping a pair of duals to Sioux Central and Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire on Monday night, the Indians fell 69-12 to ELC, 57-24 to Emmetsburg and 69-12 to Algona in Estherville on Tuesday.

Boji boys snap 6-game losing streak against Generals


Okoboji’s boys basketball team snapped a six-game losing streak with a 10-point Siouxland Conference road win over Sibley-Ocheyedan on Tuesday, Jan. 23. The Pioneers topped the Generals 59-49 in Sibley.

Okoboji/HMS girls go 2-0 at Rock Valley duals


The Okoboji/HMS girls wrestling team went 2-0 at a pair of duals hosted by Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 23. The Pioneers defeated MOC-Floyd Valley and BH/RV in Rock Valley to wrap the Siouxland Conference regular season slate.

In their 42-36 win over BH/RV, the Pioneers won four of seven contested matches.
