Spirit Lake’s football team spit and sputtered for most of the first half of Friday’s second-round matchup with Osage, but the Indians found a spark when they needed it most.

Spirit Lake’s dynamic senior duo of Brandon Hughes and Dietrich Dirks proved to be among the state’s best runners Saturday, Nov. 2 at the 2024 Iowa High School Cross Country Championships held at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

Okoboji boys wrap season at state meet

 

Okoboji’s boys cross country team, after earning back-to-back runner-up finishes at the state meet the last two seasons, capped its year with a 12th-place team finish at the 2024 Iowa High School Cross Country Championships held Saturday, Nov. 2 at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

The Pioneers totaled 241 points on the day.

A look at the pheasant opener

 

With the 2024 pheasant opener in the books, let’s take a look at how things went over the expanse of 16 counties in northwest Iowa. According to District 1 Captain, Greg Harson, DNR law enforcement officers checked hunting groups throughout the district and were pleased with the way hunters handled themselves and found very few compliance issues.

New snowmobile law streamlines permit requirements for residents

 

Iowa snowmobilers are no longer required to purchase and display an annual trail user permit, according to a new law that went into effect July 1, 2024. The law folded the trail user permit into the annual snowmobile registration fee, which will now be $30 plus administration fees. The previous price for each type was $15.

Iowa stream flows concerning heading into winter

 

After record low precipitation in September and October, drought conditions have reappeared across much of Iowa, causing river and stream flows to drop to similar levels as in 2023. Heading into winter, the potential impacts to the fish and other aquatic organisms is concerning Iowa’s fisheries experts.

SURVIVE AND ADVANCE: Spirit Lake earns come-from-behind victory over Cherokee in first round

 

Entering Friday night’s first-round playoff matchup with Cherokee, Spirit Lake head football coach Josh Bolluyt said his team needed a challenge. To that point, the Indians had dominated their last seven opponents by a combined score of 324 to 40.

They got all they could ask for while earning a come-from-behind 31-27 victory over the Braves on Friday, Oct. 25 in Spirit Lake.

Pioneers’ dream season ends with loss to Wolfpack

 

Okoboji’s historic football season came to an end Friday, Oct. 25 with a loss to Western Christian in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs. The Wolfpack defeated the Pioneers 41-28 in Milford.

Hughes, Spirit Lake boys cross country win district titles

 

For the second consecutive season, Spirit Lake’s boys cross country team punched its ticket to the state cross country championships in Fort Dodge. The Indians edged runner-up Unity Christian by a single point to win their first district title since 2011 at the Class 2A state qualifying meet held Thursday, Oct. 24 at Landsmeer Golf Club in Orange City.

For the fourth consecutive year — and seventh time in the last eight seasons — Okoboji’s boys cross country team will compete as a unit at the state cross country championships in Fort Dodge. The Pioneers, who have earned back-to-back runner-up finishes at the state meet in Class 2A, placed second at the state qualifying meet held Thursday, Oct. 24 at Red Oak.

Spirit Lake volleyball drops playoff match to Algona

 

Spirit Lake’s volleyball team ended its season with a 3-0 home loss to Algona in the opening round of the Class 3A regional tournament held Tuesday, Oct. 22. The Bulldogs defeated the Indians 25-23, 25-10 and 25-20 in Spirit Lake.

Lauren Travis led the offense with nine kills. Leah Bolluyt and Anabel Sinz had six kills each. Anthea Leupold had five kills. Ellie Bolluyt dished out 16 assists and Faith DeWild had eight.

Okoboji’s volleyball season ended Tuesday, Oct. 22 with a 3-0 loss to seventh-ranked Sioux Center in the opening round of the Class 3A regional tournament. The Warriors defeated the Pioneers 25-18, 25-10 and 25-11 in Sioux Center.

Wolves volleyball falls in first round of postseason play

 

Harris-Lake Park’s volleyball team saw its season come to a close with a 3-0 loss to Trinity Christian in the opening round of the Class 1A regional tournament held Monday, Oct. 21. The Tigers defeated the Wolves 25-18, 25-15 and 25-15 in Hull.
