Looking for something to do? (Part 1)

BY JILL JENNINGS

Have you ever had down time, or maybe time between appointments when you didn’t want to go home, but couldn’t think of what to do with yourself? Come to the Spirit Lake Public Library! We have many ways to pass the time while waiting to pick up the kiddos from school or the dog from his grooming appointment.

The most obvious thing is to read a book! We have books of all genres, fiction and non-fiction for anyone and everyone. There are regular print and large print for the adults, young adult books, and juvenile books for the kids. There are a variety of graphic novels, too. Those are mostly in Juvenile Fiction, but we do have some graphic novels in the Young Adult and Adult sections as well. There are easy books for the beginning readers, and board books for the babies and toddlers. We have a small collection of Wonderbooks for the kids. These are traditional books with text, but they include built-in audio that can read the story out loud.

If you aren’t interested in reading a book, you could catch up on the latest news with one of our newspapers. We have lots of magazines, too. There are many comfy chairs scattered around the library. This time of year, the reading nook by the fireplace is especially popular!

We have a portable CD player and headphones that you could check out if you would like to listen to an audiobook on CD. We also have ear buds for sale if you want to listen to a digital audiobook on your device. Another audiobook format is the Playaway. One book is loaded onto an MP3 player. You would need headphones or earbuds to listen to it. Listening to an audiobook totally counts as “reading!”

Lastly, you could shop our book sale. There are lots of choices and some of them are even new!

Next week I will have ideas of what to do at the library that do not include books.

SLPL staff reading spotlight: Debbie is currently reading The Pumpkin Spice Café (Dream Harbor, #1) by Laurie Gilmore.
