May is National Foster Care Month, a time during which we raise awareness to the many complex issues facing children and youth in foster care. This year the focus is on mental and behavioral health, the largest unmet need for children and youth in the system.

According to numbers from the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, more than 6,600 children in Iowa were in the state’s foster care system in 2022.
