1929 - 2024

Our dear mother, Carla McClure, passed away on July 13, 2024, at the age of 95. She was a wonderful mother of four children who was always there when we needed her most, offering support, wisdom, humor, and love in abundance. She never asked for attention but lived for serving others – a humble model for all of us follow.

Carla Bixler was born in Crescent to Neal and Blanche Bixler. She lived her entire life in Iowa, except for a brief period in Fort Belvoir, Virginia while Jack (her husband) was in the service. A graduate of Rolfe High School, she married Jon E. McClure in Rolfe and were together ‘50’ years until Jon’s death in 2000. After Jon’s death, Carla shared a long-time companionship with Dr. Don Rodawig.

Carla was an active member in P.E.O., Fort Dodge and Spirit Lake United Methodist Church, and valued the regular company of a large circle of friends in Fort Dodge and Lake Okoboji. Let’s not forget her passion for Bridge and Mahjong and the people she enjoyed.

She loved her twice-weekly appointment at the Beauty Box, enjoyed dining out, caring for anyone in need and a house full of family. Carla was a gracious humble host to all who entered the doors of her home. The back door was always unlocked for anyone to stop by and enjoy her famous chocolate chip cookies. Carla loved the views and experience of living at Lake Okoboji.

She is survived by her four children: Martha (Glenn) Van Ekeren, Melissa Nelson, Mary (Dr. Kelly) Bosworth and Jon (Lindy) McClure. Carla was preceded in death by her husband Jon and son-in-law Wayne Nelson.

A treasured sizable group of grandchildren and great-grandchildren enjoy the memories of their precious grandma. We can all be comforted in the knowledge that heaven now has a well-stocked pantry and diapers in every size for the tiny ones!

To commemorate her incredible journey and to celebrate the love she spread, a Memorial Service will be celebrated at the Wayzata Community Church at 125 Wayzata Blvd. E, Wayzata, MN.  55391. We invite all who knew her to join us at 2 p.m. on Sept. 21 in remembering a truly remarkable woman.

Memorials are suggested to The Okoboji Foundation (https://okobojifoundation.org).
