State commission approves Silver Lake shore stabilization project

 

Some proposed plans for stabilizing Silver Lake's shores got the go-ahead from state officials last month. Iowa's Natural Resource Commission approved the construction project Jan. 19. The recently approved work is just a portion of the overall improvement efforts and will span about 4,000 feet of deteriorated public shoreline in the northwestern portion of the lake. Work is anticipated to be complete by mid-September this year.

Reverts named to H-LP Board of Education

 

 

Candidate Jamie Reverts is expected to join the Harris-Lake Park Board of Education later this month.


H-LP Superintendent Andy Irwin said former board member Arin Elser recently stepped down after taking a new job, and Reverts will fill the remainder of Elser's term. If soon-to-be-seated board member decides to seek another term, she will appear on the ballot in November of 2023.

Shake it up: Spirit Lake show choir readies to host annual competition

 

Months of preparation is about to pay off for the Spirit Lake Schools Music Department.

The annual Shake the Lakes jazz and show choir competition will welcome ensembles from dozens of school districts to the Sami Bedell Performing Arts Center in Spirit Lake next week. The 2022 performances will mark the event's fourth year, having taken a hiatus last year as many things did under the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bird makes local stop ahead of race for Iowa Attorney General

A county attorney in central Iowa running for Iowa Attorney General made a stop in the Lakes Area on Thursday. Guthrie County Attorney Brenna Bird said her campaign is traveling to all of Iowa's 99 counties and seeking support to appear on the ballot for the position currently held by Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller.

Spirit Lake man now facing first-degree murder charge in Milford shooting case

Update Feb. 4, 2022: The Iowa Department of Public Safety provided additional information on the shooting in a Feb. 3 statement. An initial criminal complaint had listed Goyne-Yarns as a resident of Jackson, Minnesota.

Area residents gathered in the Dickinson County Expo Building midday Thursday to hear about a second carbon sequestration pipeline which may cross portions of southern Dickinson County.

Pillsbury Point residents oppose possible path along state shoreline

 

Residents in the area of Pillsbury Point on West Lake Okoboji have filed a court petition against the city of Arnolds Park and the state of Iowa. The group says the city plans to improve a nearby pathway but claims the city has abandoned rights to it. Both the city and the state have filed for the case to be dismissed.
