A county attorney in central Iowa running for Iowa Attorney General made a stop in the Lakes Area on Thursday. Guthrie County Attorney Brenna Bird said her campaign is traveling to all of Iowa's 99 counties and seeking support to appear on the ballot for the position currently held by Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller.

Update Feb. 4, 2022: The Iowa Department of Public Safety provided additional information on the shooting in a Feb. 3 statement. An initial criminal complaint had listed Goyne-Yarns as a resident of Jackson, Minnesota.

A memorial service for former Dickinson County Supervisor Paul Johnson is expected to be held in the Spirit Lake at a later date this year. Johnson passed away Dec. 29, 2021, at the age of 89.

County to consider possible action

Area residents gathered in the Dickinson County Expo Building midday Thursday to hear about a second carbon sequestration pipeline which may cross portions of southern Dickinson County.

Residents in the area of Pillsbury Point on West Lake Okoboji have filed a court petition against the city of Arnolds Park and the state of Iowa. The group says the city plans to improve a nearby pathway but claims the city has abandoned rights to it. Both the city and the state have filed for the case to be dismissed.

Okoboji alumnus Zach Koepp took a few different paths in life before becoming a film maker, but he said story telling has always been a part of his life.

Iowa lawmakers met once again in the Capitol building Thursday and approved the second proposed draft of the state's new legislative districts.

A Spirit Lake man has been sentenced for his part in seriously injuring of a fellow boater in August of 2020.

Officials with Milford Municipal Utilities said plans for a new $18.6 million water treatment plant are in the works. The current plan was built in 1978, and MMU is also proposing an incremental increase in end user fees — the fee for connections to MMU's water main — over three years to help cover the cost. A public hearing on the matter will be held at 6:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1 at the Milford Community Building.

A branch of the Iowa Supreme Court has revoked a Spirit Lake attorney's license to practice law. Lonnie Saunders, who up until earlier this year served as assistant Dickinson County Attorney, signed an affidavit consenting to his disbarment and "does not dispute that he misappropriated client funds." Filings in the decision said Saunders may be eligible for readmission after five years.

A Spirit Lake man accused of committing murder in rural Ireton had hoped charges would be dismissed after a new trial was granted in June. However, a jury of his peers found 71-year-old Gregg Eugene Winterfeld guilty of second-degree murder after deliberations this month. The jury chosen for Winterfeld's initial trial in April came to the same conclusion.
