Anglers at the ready for annual Walleye Weekend

It wasn't too long ago that those hoping to hook a fish in the Iowa Great Lakes had to come prepared with an ice auger but, with some early summer-like temperatures this season, the surface of the local lakes thawed rapidly ahead of the 41st annual Walleye Weekend fishing tournament.

New Milford Postmaster installed

Crystal Dunn was officially installed as Milford's Postmaster the morning of Tuesday April 25 at the Milford Post Office. Dunn was actually appointed as postmaster on Dec. 4, 2021, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed her installation ceremony until late last month. She was sworn into office by Acting Manager of Post Office Operations Michelle Ryan.

Okoboji Music Masters to hold auditions

Okoboji Music Masters is currently looking for local, talented vocalists and instrumentalists for their upcoming summer season. The group will hold 10-minute auditions from 4-6 p.m. May 17-18, with rehearsals starting on May 22.

Youth In Philanthropy grants $60,000 to local non-profits

The 2023 Youth In Philanthropy program of the Okoboji Foundation concluded its year the evening of Wednesday April 26 with a grant award ceremony. Together, participating students reached out to more than 250 community members and asked for their support, raising $60,000 which were awarded to four area nonprofits:

• $24,500 to the Humane Society of Northwest Iowa for dog kennel and training renovation project

Docker John Staebler, age 29, of Okoboji was charged with operating while under the influence — third or subsequent offense — and interference with official acts at approximately 11:20 p.m. Friday, April 28 in the area of Country Club Drive in Okoboji. A criminal complaint said Staebler "had driven himself and his girlfriend home from the bars in Arnolds Park," and an argument ensued once they reached their apartment building.

Hays to speak at ILUUF

Allen Hays will be the speaker at the May 7 Iowa Lakes Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hybrid service. Hays is co-chair of the Iowa Justice Action Network, a statewide network of citizens concerned with ending mass incarceration in Iowa and the nation. IJAN is collaborating with The Sentencing Project to sponsor major events and discussions around the complex factors contributing to the U.S. having the highest incarceration rates of any country in the world.

LRH invites prospective volunteers to informational brunch

For more than 50 years, volunteers at Lakes Regional Healthcare have assisted patients and staff in various ways, such as escorting and transporting patients throughout the facility, delivering patient meal trays to cancer patients as they receive chemotherapy and assisting gift shop customers.

Dr. Kevin Mason will present a talk on Inkpaduta and the Sioux of northwest Iowa. This is a free program and everyone is welcome.

The Iowa Rock 'n Roll Music Association recently announced plans to bring Jett Threatt – A Tribute to Joan Jett and The Blackhearts to the Roof Garden Ballroom at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 27. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and tickets are available now at iowarocknroll.com/events.
