Northwest Bank donates to Dickinson County Relay for Life

Northwest Bank locations in Spencer, Milford, Arnolds Park, Spirit Lake and Estherville celebrated customer appreciation day on June 23. Each location provided ice cream treats and a drawing in which the winner received a prize package along with the opportunity to select a local charity for Northwest Bank to make a cash donation to.

Northwest Bank added to the celebration by sponsoring a community shred day at multiple bank locations.

Spirit of Harmony to present pre-show entertainment at OST

The public is invited to join the Spirit of Harmony Chorus as they present pre-show entertainment at 7:30 p.m., Friday, July 21 before the Okoboji Summer Theatre production of "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike."

Ethan Kroll, age 26, of Ricketts, was charged with intimidation. A Spirit Lake Police report indicated Kroll was reported Thursday, June 29 for an incident which took place on February 1, 2023. The report listed an address in the 1600 block of Ithaca Avenue in Spirit Lake.

Jerry Lee Hargreaves, age 45, of Mankato, Minnesota, was charged with trespassing at approximately 10:15 a.m. Sunday, July 2 in the 2400 block of Chicago Avenue in Spirit Lake.

Peschong graduates from Drake University

Drake University recently announced Megan Peschong of Milford was among its recent class of graduates. Peschong received a doctorate degree in occupational therapy. Drake is a midsize, private university in Des Moines, Iowa, enrolling more than 3,000 undergraduate and 1,800 graduate students.

A district court judge dismissed a trespassing charge against a carbon dioxide pipeline company’s land surveyor because there was no evidence he was told to avoid the property, according to court records.

A man involved in what authorities called near drowning on Independence Day in the area of Millers Bay has died, according to obituary information.

Randy Vilayphone, age 21, of Sioux Falls South Dakota, passed away Saturday, July 8, according to information posted by George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls.

McKee heading back to national pageant after 2022 setback

Sometimes advocacy has to start with one's self.

Young Neveya McKee was excited to compete in the National American Miss pageant in Florida last year, after placing in the top 10 Miss Iowa competitors the previous November and earning the pageant's Miss Spirit Award.

The Iowa Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of a Lake Park man who was found guilty last year of sexually abusing two young relatives — both under the age of 12.

Local teachers accept summer externships in workplace

Three local teachers are among 82 teachers participating in the 2023 Iowa STEM Teacher Externships Program, which provides teachers the opportunity to work at local STEM businesses, nonprofits, government services and other workplaces to gain work experiences that can be applied in the classroom. Since the program’s launch in 2009, the Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council has organized more than 800 externship experiences throughout the state.

Andrew John Schwager, age 37, was booked into the Dickinson County Jail at 4:28 p.m. Thursday, June 29 on a previous court decision. He is scheduled for release Tuesday, July 27, 2023.

Clifton David Taylor, age 50, was booked into the Dickinson County Jail at 11:05 p.m. Thursday, June 29 on the charge of violation of probation. Bond was set at $2,000.

Spirit Lake Public News 07-06-23

This is the last week for the Summer Reading Program at the Spirit Lake Public Library. All logs must be turned in by 4 p.m., Friday July 14. Next week we will begin the Extended Summer Reading Program. We want to keep those kids reading. It will be a scaled-back version of what we’ve been doing for the last seven weeks. The Extended SRP will go through Friday, Aug. 11.

Okoboji Foundation hosting annual nonprofit challenge

The annual nonprofit challenge, hosted by the Okoboji Foundation, encourages giving to the local nonprofits who have partner funds with the Okoboji Foundation. The nonprofit fund that receives the highest amount of donations during the month of July will receive a matching grant of up to $5,000 from the Okoboji Foundation.
