Summit Carbon Solutions has failed to minimize the negative impacts of its proposed carbon dioxide pipeline in North Dakota and will not be permitted to construct it, state regulators decided on Friday.

Appreciating farmers for 40 years

The community is now readying for the 40th annual celebration of Farmers Appreciation Days — plural. And organizers said the public can expect a number of the weekend's staple events to return in full force.

Community celebrates life of late Beverly Pearson

Dozens of people took their seats Saturday ahead of a planned celebration of life for the late Beverly Pearson at the Pearson Lakes Art Center's outdoor amphitheater. Pearson passed away in March after decades of supporting the center — and by Saturday's noon starting time, there were more people present than the amphitheater's stone slabs could comfortably accommodate.

Boys Town celebrates its annual tradition

For 70 years, Boys Town has offered its youth an annual summer camp opportunity at the nonprofit's Camp Okoboji. As the camp’s 70th season started wrapping up, campers and their families celebrated with the annual Blue Water Bash fundraiser.

Chamber welcomes All Fur Love

Members of the Spirit Lake Chamber of Commerce stopped at All Fur Love Pet Grooming and Boutique in Spirit Lake, during the business' open house. Co-owners Ashley Woizeschke and Jessie Kabele opened the business' Spirit Lake location — 1360 Lake St. — approximately two months ago, but both had already been grooming animals for a number of years.

Pioneer Days pedal pull winners released

Winners in the 2023 Iowa State Pedal Pull Association meet were recently announced by the Milford Pioneer Days Committee.

The official pull was held Friday, July 21 during the Pioneer Days Celebration. First place winners advance to state competition. Organizers thanked all the youth who participated in this contest and the Milford FFA students who assisted with the pull during Pioneer Days.

Wayde Coffey, an Iowa Lakes Community College sophomore from Carbondale, Illinois, demonstrated excellence at the 2023 SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, earlier this year. He earned third place in the college-level Motorcycle Service Technology division.

Masons donate to UDMO

Members of Twilight Masonic Lodge No. 329 of Spirit Lake recently presented Upper Des Moines Opportunity with $2,000 for the Back-to-School Program. The program aids income-eligible children in kindergarten through 12th grade with buying new school clothes and supplies.

Sirens 08-03-23

Cristan Pena, age 29, and Manuel Morales, age 21, both of Denison were charged with theft from a building at approximately 5:56 p.m. Sunday, July 23 in the 2400 block of 25th Street in Spirit Lake.

Brandon Koch, age 30, of Waukon was charged with shoplifting at approximately 8:13 p.m. Monday, July 24. A Spirit Lake Police report indicated the theft took place at approximately 8 p.m. Saturday, July 22 at the Spirit Lake Walmart.

Youth in Philanthropy accepting applications

Youth In Philanthropy, a program of the Okoboji Foundation, is currently accepting applications through Friday, Sept. 8 for the 2023-24 school year. Applications are available online at  www.okobojifoundation.org/yip and open to all high school students, freshman through senior, in Dickinson County.

Milford Memorial Library News 08-03-23

Milford Memorial Library and the Friends of the Milford Library Foundation would like to thank everyone who came out and supported the book sale.
