IGL Chamber welcomes Mr. Appliance in Milford

Officials with the Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce headed to Milford on Friday to welcome Mr. Appliance as its newest member. Owner Dana Evaro said, after nearly three decades with Landmark Products in Milford, he decided to go in a completely different direction. He said he and his fiance researched local business needs and found there was a market for appliance repair in the area, and Mr.

The Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association is pleased to host guitarist, author and Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Associaiton member Ryan Sheeler on Saturday Sept. 16 for a special booking signing event, featuring his second guitar book on Ritchie Valens. Valens' sister Connie Valens will also attend the event, as organizers celebrate her brother's music and legacy. Admission is free.

Dakota Ray Alsbury, age 24, of Okoboji was charged with operating while intoxicated — second offense — at approximately 2:27 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6 near the Kwik Star convenience station in Spirit Lake. A preliminary breath test indicated her blood alcohol concentration was more than twice the legal limit to operate a vehicle in Iowa. A criminal complaint noted Alsbury's previous arrest was in 2014, while she was a juvenile.

DMACC recognizes local students during summer semester

Nearly 700 students graduated during Des Moines Area Community College's summer semester. The college campuses in Ankeny, Boone, Carroll, Newton, Urban and West Campuses. Among the graduates were Caleb Nicks of Lake Park, who earned a degree in business administration, and Kassandra Winkowitsch of Milford who earned a liberal arts degree.

South Dakota denies Summit permit; both carbon pipelines proposed in SD now rejected

Companies can address regulatory concerns and reapply later

 

Some landowners who’ve been fighting against a proposed carbon dioxide pipeline shed tears of joy Monday as South Dakota utility regulators denied a permit application from Summit Carbon Solutions.

The decision means both carbon pipelines currently proposed in eastern South Dakota have been rejected in their first attempts to gain permits in the state.

Ramaswamy makes campaign stop in Okoboji

 

An audience gathered Friday morning inside Tweeter's Bar and Grill in Okoboji to hear from presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, who is seeking the Republican nomination.

Ramaswamy described himself as a businessman and author, who founded several companies, including one in the biotech field. The 38-year-old told the packed restaurant that he is also the youngest Republican candidate to seek the presidency.

Summit identified ‘handful’ of populated areas at risk from major pipeline breach

 

There are several areas of “high consequence” in Iowa that could be inundated by carbon dioxide if Summit Carbon Solutions’ proposed pipeline has a major failure, according to James Powell, the company’s chief operating officer.

On Tuesday, Powell was the first witness for the company to testify at its evidentiary hearing with the Iowa Utilities Board, which is weighing whether to approve a route for the project. Powell did not identify the at-risk areas.

Latisha Victoria Mae Black Bull, age 24, was booked into the Dickinson County Jail at 5:24 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30 on the charge of violation of her probation. The county jail roster later listed her charge as failure to appear/contempt of court. Bond was set at $1,000. Online court records say Black Bull failed to appear for an Aug. 3 hearing regarding the revocation of her probation after failing to maintain contact with authorities.

Join MML’s Open Book Discussion Group at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19 to discuss the featured book "The Day the World Came to Town" by Jim DeFede. When 38 jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land at Gander International Airport in Canada by the closing of U.S. airspace on Sept. 11, the population of this small town on Newfoundland Island swelled from 10,300 to nearly 17,000.

Bridge marathon to begin

St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milford will again host their annual bridge marathon beginning in September 2023 through April 30, 2024. Persons interested in playing bridge on a round-robin schedule are asked to call the parish office at 338-2274 by noon Friday, Sept. 8. This deadline will be strictly enforced. Cost is $10 for the year. A fun night is held in May to announce the winners.
