CeJay Alexander Vander Wilt, age 18, was booked into the Dickinson County Jail at 6:41 p.m. Tuesday, May 31 and held for another agency.

April Ann Hawn, age 34, of Milford was charged with assault with intent to inflict serious injury at approximately 1:18 p.m. Thursday, May 26

Timothy Jude Brickner, age 29, was booked into the Dickinson County Jail at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, June 1 on the charge of failure to appear/contempt of court.

Stormy weather doesn't dampen Memorial Day programs

Wind and rain early Monday prompted area Memorial Day programs to move indoors. Many members of the public turned out despite the weather and participated in the recognition of fallen veterans.

Milford Fire Department quells controlled burn twice Friday

Milford firefighters were called out to a rural address twice Friday to contain a controlled burn.

Milford Fire Chief Jim Carpenter said the department headed to the 2000 block of 150th Avenue both before and after lunch that day. He said no injuries were reported after a controlled burn there became less than controlled.

Spirit of Harmony honors members

Spirit of Harmony Chorus met on Monday, May 16 for their annual awards and officer installation banquet at The Hutt in Arnolds Park. This banquet is a time for them to honor members, install their officers and just spend time together socializing and singing.
The Spirit of Harmony Chorus selects one of its members each year to be the Sweet Adeline of the Year, and one of its members is also selected as Woman of Note.  

Commodores cut ribbon with Keller Williams

The Iowa Navy Commodores made a brief excursion Thursday afternoon to Keller Williams Okoboji to recognize the business and its new location. Kevin Archer, managing broker with the real estate office, said Keller Williams Okoboji and Keller Williams Siouxland are one team in two locations. The real estate company's Sioux City office started up about six years ago, according to Archer, and grew from 25 agents to 80 agents in that time.

Celtic Guitarist Jerry Returns to Milford Memorial Library

The Spirit Lake, Arnold Park and Milford Memorial Libraries are pleased to once again welcome acclaimed Celtic guitarist and storyteller Jerry Barlow for a special concert. The program will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 16 at the Milford Memorial Library, 1009 9th St. in Milford. The program is sponsored by the libraries and is free to the community.

Commodores make splash at Boji Surf

The Iowa Navy Commodores stepped ashore Thursday at Boji Surf Co. in Arnolds Park to welcome the business as a new member of the Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce. Owner Robb Rodriguez founded the business in 2015. Rodriguez said he and his son Karson had been pondering the beginnings of a lifestyle apparel business, which then grew into a full-on brand.

New Cooperative supports 4-H students

The New Cooperative Foundation showed its commitment to supporting local 4-H youth. The foundation recently donated $50,805 to 22 counties, totaling 3,387 individual 4-H members.

William Grant Haw, age 38, was booked into the Dickinson County Jail at 12:53 a.m. Tuesday, May 24 on a previous court decision. He was scheduled for release Tuesday, May 31, 2022.

Mylonna Jae Douglas, age 19, of Cedar Rapids was charged with possession of marijuana — first offense — at approximately 12:51 a.m. Wednesday, May 25 in the 4000 block of Highway 71.

'Welcome To Medicare' event to be held June 14

An upcoming, two-hour Welcome to Medicare event offered by Lakes Regional Healthcare SHIIP counselors can help the public understand what Medicare offers and what benefits you are eligible for. Organizers feel the session may be beneficial to those who will be eligile for Medicare in the near future, those helping a family member navigate Medicare and those who may have been on Medicare for some time but want to better understand what it offers.

Class offered on navigating workplace injuries

Iowa Lakes Community College and the Tietz Entrepreneurial Center will offer an online Navigating Workplace Injuries class from 6:30-8 p.m. June 2.
From an unfortunate incident at a worksite to the injured worker returning to work, this session will explore the employer's responsibilities, the insurance carrier, the doctor and the employee — all working toward a favorable outcome and the worker's safe, expedient return to work.

Area Library News

The Spirit Lake Public Library, Arnolds Park Library and Milford Memorial Library have been shouting from their rooftops about the upcoming 2022 Summer Reading Program. Well, the week has finally arrived, and they can’t wait to see everyone at the kick off celebration at 10:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. Thursday, June 2, at the Milford Pioneer Theatre. There will be two free movie showings of "RV," and the libraries will have information about their own programs for the kiddos.

Monday's closing arguments in the case against murder suspect Allison Decker capped off the 27-year-old's five-day trial.
