Diesel hauler fills wrong tank, causes spill at state park

It was a case of mistaken identity: Someone hauling diesel fuel tried to refill the wrong tank — which wasn’t empty — and leaked an estimated 600 gallons near a state park in northwest Iowa, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Walker places at National Business Professionals of America Conference

Iowa Lakes Community College student Jessica Walker placed second in her division at the 2022 Business Professionals of America National Conference held in Dallas, Texas. Founded in 1966, BPA is the premier career and technical student organization for middle, high school and college students preparing for careers in business, finance, management information systems and related fields.

Northwest Iowa Concert Band plans several area performances

A band concert featuring the Northwest Iowa Concert Band will be held at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 13 at Keelson Harbour. Directed by Rich Nicklay, the band includes volunteers from several communities around Northwest Iowa. The public is invited. Face coverings and COVID screening will be required. Musical selections will include marches, patriotic, sing-a-longs and Happy Birthday to resident Gladys Zweifel on her 105th birthday. Keelson Harbour Senior Living is located at 2810 Aurora Ave.

Tourville authors House of Blues discography

Midwest Publications recently announced a new book by Tom Tourville — "The House of Blues Records Story and Discography." The book chronicles the history and discography of the famed House Of Blues Records label. The label was established by House of Blues founders, Isaac Tigrett, Dan “Elwood Blues" Aykroyd and label owner Steve Devick.

Mattie Hope Karriker, age 19, of Spirit Lake was charged with vandalism at approximately 10:38 p.m. Tuesday, June 28 in the 200 block of 24th Street in Spirit Lake.

Lynne Koelling to perform at Calvary Methodist

Lynne Koelling will present a musical program at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 21 at Calvary Methodist Church in Arnolds Park. The musical program will feature songs from several Broadway musicals. A sing-a-long with some of the golden oldies and favorite gospel songs will also be included in the program. Refreshments will be served. This event is open to anyone who would like to attend.

LRH seeks Hospice volunteers

For nearly 20 years, Lakes Regional Healthcare has provided care locally to terminally ill patients through their hospice program. Hospice is a special kind of service that concentrates on care, not cure, for patients of all ages and with various types of illnesses. It is designed to provide sensitivity and support for people in the final phase of a terminal illness. The goal for the patient is for their last days to be spent with dignity and quality at home or in a home-like setting.

LRH receives 2022 Outstanding Patient Experience Award

Lakes Regional Healthcare was recently recognized as a 2022 Outstanding Patient Experience Award recipient by Healthgrades. Hospitals that received this recognition represent the top 15 percent of hospitals in the United States for patient experience.

The 2022 Youth Summer Reading Program is winding down, but there is still one more family opportunity at our End Celebration. This fun evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 14, at the Dickinson County Nature Center. The three local libraries, the Antoines and Miss Bryanna will be having a nature program, storybook walk, s’mores and campfire songs. If the weather does not cooperate, the rain date will be Tuesday, July 19 at the same time and location.

Iowa Lakes receives federal funding for TRIO Upward Bound Program


The U.S. Department of Education recently funded the Iowa Lakes Community College TRIO Upward Bound program for five more years. Contingent on annual congressional appropriations, the award is expected to total $1,488,005 over the next five years. The Iowa Lakes TRIO Upward Bound program serves 60 students in grades nine through 12 attending Emmetsburg, Estherville Lincoln Central, Spencer and North Union High Schools.

Holdorf  among 2022 Luther grads

Kylie Holdorf, of Spirit Lake participated in Commencement for the Luther College class of 2022 on May 22. Holdorf received a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology and earned magna cum laude honors. A total of 413 graduates were honored and celebrated in Carlson Stadium. Of that number, 183 graduates received Latin honors, seven were fourth-generation Luther graduates, and more than 100 were first-generation college students.

I Am They, Matthew West among free concerts at Okoboji Bible Conference

The 2022 Okoboji Bible Conference will kick off with a full weekend of concerts later this month. The Okoboji Bible Conference begins Saturday, July 30 and runs through Saturday, Aug. 6. OBC has assembled a variety of speakers, professors, authors and worship leaders to provide the community with vibrant worship, engaging teaching and fun for the whole family. This year’s theme will focus on John 15:9, in which Jesus tells his disciples to “Abide in my love.”

OkoboTree project transforms dead tree trunks into public art

A trio of trunks have been transformed into outdoor public sculptures as part of an effort to repurpose dead trees in the Lakes Area. The nonprofit Spirit of Okoboji's OkoboTree project hired Des Moines chainsaw artist Gary Keenan to sculpt the first three trees included in the project.

Decker to be sentenced later this month for murder, theft

Sentencing has been scheduled for 27-year-old Allison Marie Decker, who was found guilty last month of murdering Angel Bastman of Lake Park in December of 2020. Decker is expected to be sentenced on both murder and theft charges the morning of July 29.
