Lunar eclipse makes for late night spectacle

Stargazers and skywatchers in the Lakes Area witnessed a lunar eclipse Sunday night. The spectacle reached its totality at 10:29 p.m. central time, according to information from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Spirit Of Harmony earns first place honors

Instead of traveling to Rochester, Minnesota, for their annual regional competition this year, the Spirit of Harmony Chorus gathered at The Venue in Spirit Lake the afternoon of Saturday, April 23 to view the results of their virtual competition. In-person competition had changed to a video submission only, and the chorus decided to submit a recording from their 2022 Friends and Family performance. The chorus members were thrilled when the announcement was delivered via a Facebook Live event

DOT delays repaving of Highway 71 after single high bid

Lakes Area businesses and residents may have another year to prepare for road construction which would temporarily close the only bridge in that area of the local chain of lakes.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Transportation presented several options in December for repaving a stretch of Highway 71 which runs between the cities of Arnolds Park and Okoboji. That stretch includes a bridge which crosses a narrow point between East Lake Okoboji and West Lake Okoboji.

SLMS Marching Band heads to Tulip Festival


The Spirit Lake Middle School Marching Band will be participating in the Orange City Tulip Festival Parade on Thursday, May 19. The band has received numerous awards over three decades, and received first place and People’s Choice trophies last year. This is the 81st Annual Tulip Festival, and it will be the band’s 35th year of participation. The Spirit Lake Middle School Marching Band has 52 members and is under the direction of Sally Jo Ites. Stephanie Marco, personal banker with Northwest Bank in Spirit Lake, successfully completed the Iowa Bankers Association Consumer Credit School Feb. 28 through March 4 in Ankeny.

Iowa Lakes students serve in Chicago

During Spring Break in March, Iowa Lakes Community College students from the Laker Life campus ministry volunteered their time serving others on a week-long mission trip to Chicago. Instead of spending the week somewhere warmer or just taking the week off, the students decided to work with underprivileged children and prepare and serve food at shelters for people experiencing homelessness.
