The New Cooperative Foundation showed its commitment to supporting local 4-H youth. The foundation recently donated $50,805 to 22 counties, totaling 3,387 individual 4-H members.

William Grant Haw, age 38, was booked into the Dickinson County Jail at 12:53 a.m. Tuesday, May 24 on a previous court decision. He was scheduled for release Tuesday, May 31, 2022.

Mylonna Jae Douglas, age 19, of Cedar Rapids was charged with possession of marijuana — first offense — at approximately 12:51 a.m. Wednesday, May 25 in the 4000 block of Highway 71.

The Spirit Lake Public Library, Arnolds Park Library and Milford Memorial Library have been shouting from their rooftops about the upcoming 2022 Summer Reading Program. Well, the week has finally arrived, and they can’t wait to see everyone at the kick off celebration at 10:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. Thursday, June 2, at the Milford Pioneer Theatre. There will be two free movie showings of "RV," and the libraries will have information about their own programs for the kiddos.

Local American Legion Posts are once again preparing to honor those who served their country in the armed forces. Memorial Day programs are scheduled for Monday morning in Spirit Lake, Milford and Lake Park. The public is welcome to attend and participate.

A towering yellow crane lifted a stainless steel diner off the corner of Lake Street and Peoria Avenue in December of 2019, and yellow ribbon was cut on the same site Saturday to recognize the completion of the Tatanka Ska Trace trail head — the phrase meaning white buffalo in the Lakota Sioux language.

The shelter and rest area is one of the most visible additions along the Dickinson County Trail system.

Though three seats on the Dickinson County Board of Supervisors are open this election cycle, only one will see a contested race on the ballot. Incumbent Bill Leupold will face off against challenger Barb Clayton on June 7.

A pair of Republican candidates will go head to head during the June 7 Primary Election as they seek an open seat in the Iowa Senate. David Dow of Emmetsburg and Dave Rowley of Spirit Lake were the only candidates to file papers to appear on the upcoming local ballot. The two men previously threw their hat in the ring to fill the District 1 State Senate in November of 2021, after it was left vacant due to the resignation of then State Sen. Zach Whiting of Spirit Lake in October that year.

Iowa's U.S. Senate race this year features contested primary races on both sides of the political aisle. The winners of those primaries will have to compete at the ballot box again come November. Incumbent U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley has been challenged by fellow Republican State Sen. Jim Carlin. On the Democrats' side of the ballot, three candidates will seek the primary win to take on the GOP victor.

Scott Hunter, licensed real estate agent with Sexton Real Estate, recently made a donation of $2,500 to the Okoboji Protective Association. The donation stems from a portion of his proceeds from the recent sale of his lakefront listing on West Lake Okoboji.
