Kelly to speak at ILUUF

 

Edward Kelly will be the speaker at the June 26 Iowa Lakes Unitarian Universalist Fellowship hybrid service. He will share his personal journey out of Christian Nationalism and provide tips on how one can become an ally and an advocate for LGTBQ and other marginalized groups of people and defend communities from threats to democracy. His presentation will provide hope that it is never too late to give up one’s prejudices.

Kyle Calvin Taylor, age 36, of Lake View was charged with second-degree theft and driving while barred. Criminal complaints said the offenses occurred sometime between Dec. 1, 2021 and June 14, 2022 at the Spirit Lake Walmart. Taylor is accused of under-scanning items from the store — exceeding $1,500 in value.

Okoboji Summer Theatre set to open next week, discount booklets on sale

Okoboji Summer Theatre discount booklets are available at a cost of $140 at Liberty National Bank (Okoboji), Northwest Banks (Spirit Lake, Arnolds Park, Milford), Pearson Lakes Art Center (Okoboji), Arts on Grand (Spencer) or by emailing ostavoucherbooklet@gmail.com. Each booklet includes eight vouchers, redeemable toward four musicals and three non-musicals. The eighth voucher can only be redeemed for an 8 p.m.

Recent study shows LRH's economic impact

Lakes Regional Healthcare generates 554 jobs which account for roughly 6 percent of all jobs in Dickinson County, according to the latest study by the Iowa Hospital Association. In addition, wages generated total $30.8 million, representing 8.1 percent of Dickinson County’s wages. The study also found that Lakes Regional Healthcare provides almost $10 million in community benefits to about 4,000 people in Dickinson County.

He will take you on an adventure through Camp Poison Oak, and he needs your help to solve the mystery of what creatures lie beneath Lake Poison Oak. But don’t worry, there will be no tents, sleeping bags or anything itchy during your time at this camp. Dennis will have programs at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Friday June 24 at the Pearson Lakes Art Center.

Enrollment for the 2022 Iowa Rocks Talent Contest opened June 15.


“We are proud to present the 8th annual 'Iowa Rocks Talent' competition," said Ralph Kluseman, president of the board of the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association. "This is a statewide competition for Iowa’s young musicians to showcase the music they love and to compete for a grand prize of recording time at a major Iowa recording studio and a scholarship toward music education.”

An area nonprofit is hoping to purchase the Milford airport as part of a multi-faceted development project on about 225 acres in north Milford.

Eminent domain still public's core concern during Summit pipeline update

 

Officials with Summit Carbon Solutions provided another update for county officials Tuesday. Kylee Langrell, Summit's stakeholder relations manager, said the company plans to do so at least quarterly.

Visitors celebrate opening of Narrows Preserve to public Saturday

 

Saturday's early morning showers were a concern for some as organizers prepared to host an outdoor open house from 10 a.m. to noon at The Narrows Preserve that day. However, by 9:30 a.m., the showers were gone, and visitors to the open house were greeted by overcast skies and mild temperatures, fit for informal walking tours of the recently purchased 50-acre tract of land. The property features 2,020 feet of East Lake Okoboji's last undeveloped shoreline.

Sand focuses on equal accountability during local stop

 

A handful of locals headed to Spirit Lake's Memorial Park earlier this month to hear from State Auditor Rob Sand. The local visit was his second in a tour of all 99 counties in Iowa.


Sand said he feels the job of state auditor is to maintain accountability among the state's public entities in a nonpartisan manner. He also highlighted issues related to Iowa law and potential changes he feels would more responsibly guard taxpayer dollars.

Olthoff awarded PEO scholarship

Shay Olthoff, a 2022 graduate of Okoboji High School, was selected as the recipient of this year’s $500 scholarship awarded by PEO Chapter MO of Spirit Lake. The service organization said Olthoff exemplifies the qualities valued by its members – citizenship, volunteerism and academics. She participated in sports, music, speech, National Honor Society, 4-H Club, Key Club and is active in her church. Shay plans to attend Iowa State University. (Photo submitted)

 

PEO names Kuiper as scholarship recipient

The Spirit Lake Chapter of PEO recently announced the selection of a $500 scholarship to Kristin Kuiper, a senior at Spirit Lake High School. PEO is a philanthropic education organization, encouraging women to seek their potential through higher education. Kuiper was chosen on the basis of her high school grades, leadership, moral character and participation in high school, church and community activities.

OHS students receive awards at Thespian Night

The Okoboji High School speech and drama programs held the Thespian Society induction on Sunday, May 8. Many students were awarded medals, pins and letters in speech.
There were 12 students inducted into the Thespian Society: juniors Nathan Hinshaw, Alex Koep, Amanda Persson, Anna Petersen and Seth Staydohar; sophomores Emma Graves and Sam Hoggard; freshmen Lucy Androski, Tyler Christenson, Ava Evaro, Trigg Heimdal and Preston Sires.

Klein to perform at Respite Angels

Terry Klein will be performing at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 16 at Calvary United Methodist Church in Arnolds Park. Klein performs retro classic rock and roll as well as classic country. Klein is a two-time inductee to the Iowa Rock and Roll Music Association Hall of Fame. This will be a free concert, and organizers with Respite Angels would like to invite the public to attend. Refreshments will be served.
