Local women attend GFWC

Lake Park members of the GFWC/Iowa Lake Park Federated Women's Club were among more than 70 women who attended the 94th annual state convention in Okoboji last week. The attendees heard from Liz Markert, whose daughter Emily received donated lungs.

Hallmark Media II, Inc., the new parent company of the local newspaper, made the announcement last week. The change will start with the first paper in May.

Joanne Follon, the corporation's business retention and workforce partnership coordinator, presented a number of statistics gathered from a survey of 29 businesses within the corporation's four-county area.

A Spencer man accused of stealing almost $30,000 of property from storage units in an Arnolds Park neighborhood is scheduled to have his day in court. Terry Leo Wirkus entered his written plea of not guilty in a March 22 filing, and was later given a July 5 trial date.

Stokes prepares for presidency at Iowa Lakes

Officials with Iowa Lakes Community College announced April 19 the executive dean of its Estherville campus is to become president of the college's five campuses. Scott Stokes will officially succeed current Iowa Lakes President Valerie Newhouse as of July 1.

Queen II to undergo minor hull repairs

Due to low water levels last season, the Queen II experienced some minor damage to the hull during the summer and the excursion boat will be taken out of the water on Wednesday, May 4 to conduct the repairs. 

Iowa Lakes photography instructor wins awards

Dave Petrick, photography instructor at Iowa Lakes Community College, won the 2022 Top Non-Master Certified Professional Photographer award, along with second and third-place finishes in the animal category and a third-place finish in the illustrative section at the Professional Photographers of Iowa Winter Competition and Conference held in Des Moines in March.

Youth In Philanthropy invites sponsors to celebrate

The 2022 Youth in Philanthropy program of the Okoboji Foundation will conclude its year at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 27 with a grant award ceremony at the Majestic Pavilion in Arnolds Park, awarding $53,000 to three area nonprofit organizations. All 2022 sponsors are invited to join.

Meyer inducted into Iowa Volunteer Hall Of Fame

Dr. Steven Meyer, founder of Siouxland Tanzania Educational and Medical Ministries in Sioux City, was inducted as a member of the 2022 Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame by Iowa Lt. Governor Adam Gregg in a ceremony at the Iowa State Capitol building on Thursday, April 21.
Officials said being selected for the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame is the most prestigious state-level honor volunteers can receive as recognition of extraordinary donations of volunteer service to their communities.
