Gardner Cabin open house traces ties between tragedy and tourism

 

Dozens of early Lakes Area settlers were killed by a band of incensed natives in early 1857. Yet, a strong tourist industry began to emerge a little more than a decade later.

State and local historians met with the public Friday during an open house on the site of what is known as the Spirit Lake Massacre. Organizers told visitors about not only what led up to the infamous violence but how the tragic events helped spark the area's tourist-driven economy.
