Area veterans honored during local assemblies

Several Veterans Day programs were held throughout the region last week.

The origins of today's Veterans Day ceremonies can be traced back to the first Armistice Day, held at  11 a.m. Nov. 11, 1918 in recognition of the end of WWI. Congress officially designated Nov. 11 as Armistice Day in 1926, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and the day was made a national holiday 12 years later. It was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 under President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
