West O Beer announces 2024 nonprofit fundraising nights

West O Beer recently announced its third annual On Us fundraising event series. Each month in 2024, On Us will raise money for and shine a spotlight on the following Lakes Area nonprofits and initiatives during the first half of the year:

• Feb. 1 - Bearded Rebellion

• March 7 - Spirit Lake Music Boosters

• April 4 - No Boundaries’ Boji Mileage Club

• May 2 - Prairie Lakes Area Delta Waterfowl

• June 6 - Youth in Philanthropy

Today, the name Hershey is synonymous with quality milk chocolate. Milton S. Hershey worked hard and failed often before his chocolate company was finally successful. And when he did become a household name and had earned a vast fortune, Milton and his wife Catherine decided to give it all away.

Lenten Ecumenical services returning

The Lenten Ecumencial Committee voted this past week to continue the Lenten Ecumenical Services. The services are entering their 46th season, promoting worship and unity among the local churches.

2024 Rock The Roof concert series announced

The Iowa Rock 'n Roll Music Association recently announced the 2024 entertainment lineup for the Rock The Roof summer concert series. Ralph Kluseman, president of the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Association stated, audiences always look forward to the yearly concerts.

“It’s a great time to dance to the music they love and to see all their friends," Kluseman said. "We thank our sponsors for their financial support in providing this entertainment.”

Annie Lux of Spirit Lake was recently named to Mount Mercy University's fall 2023 dean's list. Students with a semester grade point average of 3.60 or better and who are graded for six or more semester hours are eligible for inclusion on the dean's list.

Lakes Regional Healthcare recently received its audited financial results for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023. LRH ended the year with a net loss of $70,972, which was a 0.1 percent negative margin from operations. LRH’s cash and unrestricted investments were $35,858,813.

Flags ordered at half-staff to recognize passing of Bill Northey

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds on Monday ordered flags to fly at half-staff to recognize the passing of Iowa's former Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey. Flags are to remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of Northey's funeral, according to a statement from the governor's office.

MAMA aims to foster future musicians with donation to OMS program

The Okoboji Middle School band room was a little quieter than usual after their warm up scales Friday morning.

The semi-circle of student musicians held their instruments at rest as two board members of the Midwest All Music Association informed the band the school's music program had been chosen to receive a $1,250 donation.

SL Chamber visits Okoboji Trading Co.

Members of the Spirit Lake Chamber of Commerce made a Jan. 16 stop at Okoboji Trading Company in Spirit Lake to welcome the new downtown business. The shop offers a variety of custom engraved items and home goods. Owner Jeff Holdorf opened his Spirit Lake location near the corner of Lake Street and Hill Avenue on Nov. 1, 2023. Holdorf said his business was somewhat nomadic prior to that point, selling items through online sites like Etsy and Shopify.

IGL Sanitary District dedicates flagpole in Boettcher's honor

At the regular board meeting on Jan. 23, 2024, the trustees of the Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District dedicated the flag pole at the Sanitary District Office in honor of Bob Boettcher for his public service and his years as a trustee. Boettcher retired in September of 2023, after 28 years as a Sanitary District trustee. He was appointed as the first senior advisor of the Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District upon his retirement.

Muller, Gengler recognized by Community Colleges for Iowa

Community Colleges for Iowa proudly unveiled the distinguished awardees of the 2023 Outstanding Faculty and Staff Awards during their Annual Trustee Conference. Among this year's esteemed honorees from Iowa Lakes Community College were Executive Director of Human Resources Kathy Muller, who received the Outstanding Staff Award, and Wind Energy and Turbine Technology Program Coordinator Michael Gengler, who earned the Outstanding Faculty Award.
